Juhu Brings a Slice of Mumbai’s Beachfront to a Totowa Strip Mall
Hours: Mon–Sat 7am–3pm
Closed: Sundays
There’s a beach in Mumbai called Juhu, the kind of place where street vendors, sunset crowds, and generations of family tradition all collide along the sand. A new café in Totowa borrowed that name on purpose, and once you understand why, the light filled, laid back space at 517 Union Boulevard starts to make a lot more sense.
Juhu belongs to siblings Hemali and Harsh Patel, and the concept grew out of two very different chapters of their lives colliding into one menu. Hemali spent five years living in Los Angeles, long enough to fall for the city’s produce forward, health conscious approach to eating. When she came back to New Jersey, she and Harsh set out to fuse that California sensibility with the Indian ingredients and family recipes they’d grown up on, and the result reads less like a fusion gimmick and more like two honest influences finally getting to share a menu.
A Menu That Doesn’t Pick a Side
The Patels describe their food as distinctly Indian American, and the menu backs that up better than almost any label could. Bhurji sits comfortably alongside a classic bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, two dishes that rarely show up on the same page anywhere else, let alone treated with equal seriousness. Chai spiced French toast pulls a familiar diner staple into genuinely new territory, while a mango salad, grilled cheese, Caesar salad, and a spicy chicken sandwich round things out for anyone craving something a little more familiar.
Vegetarian diners get real options here too, not an afterthought tacked onto a meat heavy menu. That inclusivity fits naturally with the broader Indian culinary tradition the Patels are drawing from, where vegetarian cooking has always carried its own depth and technique rather than existing as a compromise.
Chai Done the Right Way
Coffee culture built this café’s business model, but chai is clearly its heart. Juhu brews its masala chai in house rather than leaning on a syrup or powder shortcut, and that decision alone separates it from most cafés claiming to serve the drink. Alongside the chai, the beverage menu covers coffee, cold brew, matcha, and hibiscus tea, giving the shop enough range to double as a straightforward neighborhood coffee stop for anyone not chasing the Indian flavors specifically.

A Room Built for Slowing Down
The design leans directly into that coastal Mumbai reference point, favoring bright, sunlit interiors over the dim, moody aesthetic a lot of newer cafés default to. It reads as relaxed rather than rushed, the kind of space equally suited to a solo laptop session, a catch up over coffee with a friend, or a quick family breakfast before the week gets going. A free parking lot and street parking make the stop an easy one too, a small but genuinely useful detail for a café tucked into a busy stretch of Union Boulevard.
Juhu held its soft opening on August 3rd, and it’s already carving out a distinct identity in a town with no shortage of breakfast and lunch options. A menu built on two honest, personal influences rather than a manufactured trend tends to have staying power, and Juhu’s early reception suggests Totowa has already figured that out.
A little bit of Mumbai’s beachfront, a little bit of LA, and a lot of family recipe behind it.
