A South Plainfield Lab Just Became One of the Few Places on Earth Doing This Level of Genome Work

Most people driving past 126 Corporate Boulevard in South Plainfield have no idea what’s happening inside that building. Genomes get mapped in there. Cancer gets caught earlier because of work done in there. And now, that same New Jersey facility has earned a certification that puts it in a genuinely small club of labs worldwide capable of doing best-in-class long-read sequencing.

Admera Health just secured PacBio Certified Service Provider status, adding Revio HiFi long-read sequencing to a genomics portfolio that already covered nearly everything a research team could need, from structural variant detection all the way down to isoform level detail. If that sentence sounds dense, here’s the plain version. Older sequencing technology reads DNA in short, choppy fragments, which is fine for a lot of research but genuinely struggles with the messier, more complex parts of the genome, the repetitive regions and structural rearrangements that short reads tend to miss or misassemble. Long-read sequencing reads much larger continuous stretches of DNA at once, and PacBio’s HiFi technology does it with a level of accuracy that used to require serious tradeoffs between read length and precision. Admera can now offer both simultaneously, in house, in New Jersey.

This company didn’t appear out of nowhere. Admera spun out in 2014 from Genewiz, itself a major New Jersey genomics name, and it’s operated ever since as a contract research organization built around next-generation sequencing, single-cell genomics, and bioinformatics. Everything, and I mean every single phase of the lab work, the data processing, the actual research support that biopharma clients and academic scientists depend on, happens at that one South Plainfield facility. There’s no outsourcing the hard part to some overseas lab and slapping a New Jersey address on the letterhead. The science happens here.

That decision to stay rooted in this state wasn’t sentimental, either. It was strategic, and honestly, a smart read of the map. New Jersey sits inside one of the densest concentrations of biopharmaceutical headquarters and research infrastructure on the planet, and staying close to that ecosystem means Admera’s clients, many of them major pharmaceutical and biotech players, don’t have to ship samples across the country or wait on results from a lab three time zones removed from their own R&D teams. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority backed that growth early on too, providing support that helped the company build out its lab space and bring regional scientific talent on board rather than recruiting purely from outside the state. That’s public investment paying off exactly the way it’s supposed to, quietly, in a lab most residents will never step foot in.

What Admera actually does for clients breaks down into a few distinct lanes, and each one matters for a different reason. On the sequencing side, they help biopharma companies and academic researchers map genomes that are far too complex for basic tools, work that underpins a huge amount of the genetic research happening across the industry right now. On the precision medicine side, they’ve built out serious pharmacogenomics capability, developing genetic panels that show how a specific patient’s genetic makeup will respond to a given prescription drug, which is exactly the kind of personalized medicine that’s supposed to replace decades of prescribing by trial and error. Admera became the first certified service provider anywhere in the world for Takara Bio’s Shasta Single Cell System, a serious technical distinction that put a New Jersey facility ahead of labs in far larger, more heavily funded research hubs. They’ve also partnered with academic institutions to build AI-driven platforms aimed at biomarker discovery for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, the kind of research that moves painfully slowly most years but occasionally produces the breakthrough that changes how an entire disease gets caught and treated.

I’ll say plainly what I think this all adds up to. New Jersey doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being a genuine hub of frontier level biotech work, not just pharmaceutical headquarters and sales offices, but actual bench science happening at a globally competitive level. A lab in South Plainfield now holds a certification that puts it among the very few facilities anywhere capable of this specific kind of sequencing work, and that’s not a small local achievement dressed up for a press release. That’s the kind of infrastructure that keeps major biopharma research anchored in this state instead of drifting elsewhere, and it’s exactly the sort of quiet, high-stakes progress that deserves a lot more attention than it usually gets.
