Ocean State Job Lot, the popular discount and closeout retailer, is continuing its expansion in New Jersey with a new store in Mays Landing. Known for offering brand-name merchandise at deeply reduced prices, the Rhode Island-based chain has built a reputation as a go-to destination for bargain hunters seeking variety and value. The Mays Landing store, located at 4215 Black Horse Pike in Hamilton Commons, is set to open on November 22, 2025, bringing the retailer’s unique shopping experience to Atlantic County for the second time.
The grand opening is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to noon, featuring $20 Ocean State Job Lot gift cards for the first 100 shoppers in line, complimentary coffee and hot chocolate, festive giveaways, and a visit from Santa Claus. The new store occupies a 34,120-square-foot space previously held by Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy in September 2024. Following Big Lots’ closure, Gordon Brothers Retail Partners facilitated the acquisition and transfer of select former Big Lots locations, including the Mays Landing site, to Ocean State Job Lot.
Founded in 1977, Ocean State Job Lot has grown into the largest privately held discount retailer in the Northeast, operating 176 stores, employing 7,000 associates, and generating annual revenue exceeding $850 million. Earlier this year, the company acquired 18 former Big Lots locations along the East Coast, converting them into fully operational Ocean State Job Lot stores. In addition to Mays Landing, the company recently opened stores in Barnegat, Somers Point, and Cape May. Other New Jersey locations include Clinton, Deptford, Franklin Park, Freehold, Holmdel, South Plainfield, and Sparta.
Shoppers can expect a constantly rotating inventory that makes each visit a “treasure hunt.” Products span a wide range of categories, including household essentials such as cleaning supplies and paper products, specialty and brand-name grocery items, apparel and footwear for the whole family, tools and home improvement supplies, seasonal items ranging from outdoor furniture to holiday décor, and a variety of health, beauty, pet, school, and office products.
The store’s business model is built around acquiring overstocked, discontinued, or closeout merchandise in bulk and passing the savings on to customers. Following the grand opening, the Mays Landing store will operate Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering residents a convenient new option for discount shopping.
