For over a century, the Saker family has been synonymous with quality groceries and community service in New Jersey. It all began in 1916 when Richard Saker’s great-grandfather opened a small “mom and pop” store in Freehold, New Jersey. Since then, the Saker family has been deeply rooted in the grocery industry, with Richard’s father, Joseph, joining the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative in 1947, just months after its establishment. Today, Richard Saker, along with his brothers Tom and Joe, and his son Rick, continue the family legacy by owning and operating 39 ShopRite stores in central New Jersey. Their dedication to creating a “World Class” shopping experience for customers is evident in every aspect of their business. But beyond providing quality groceries, Saker ShopRites is deeply committed to giving back to the communities it serves. Through various fundraising efforts and partnerships, Saker ShopRites supports local organizations and initiatives that make a positive impact on the lives of residents. One such initiative is the Check-Out Hunger program, which helps to support New Jersey Food Banks and combat food insecurity in the region. Saker ShopRites is also proud to have played a key role in establishing Joan Dancy and Pals, an organization that provides support for individuals and families affected by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Through the dedication of its associates, Saker ShopRites has raised over one million dollars for this worthy cause. Additionally, Saker ShopRites supports the Vision of Children Foundation, which is dedicated to combating childhood blindness. Richard and Laura Saker have been recognized for their efforts with the “Vision of Heroes” award from singer Andrea Bocelli, highlighting their commitment to this important cause. The ShopRite story itself is one of community and collaboration. Founded in the 1940s by eight mom and pop grocers who formed the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative, ShopRite stores have always been dedicated to helping customers and their communities thrive. Through initiatives like the ShopRite Partners In Caring program, which has donated nearly $51 million to food banks since 1999, ShopRite continues to make a difference in the fight against food insecurity. Furthermore, ShopRite is a proud supporter of the special needs community, offering educational and training programs through the Supermarket Careers program. They also sponsor annual events like the New Jersey Special Olympics Games, providing logistical, volunteer, and food support.
