Explore New Jersey: Paul Cotter Suspended and Devils Announce Roster Moves
Paul Cotter Suspended for Illegal Check to the Head
In a recent development, New Jersey Devils forward Paul Cotter has been handed a two-game suspension by the NHL Department of Player Safety. The suspension stems from an illegal check to the head delivered to New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech during a game on April 13, 2025.
The incident occurred when Cotter attempted to intercept a pass from Pelech. Instead of maintaining a proper angle, Cotter raised his left leg and leaned into the hit, making significant contact with Pelech’s head. The NHL ruled that the hit was avoidable and met both criteria for an illegal check to the head: the head was the primary point of contact, and the contact was avoidable. Reuters
As a result of the suspension, Cotter will miss the Devils’ final two regular-season games against the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. However, he will be eligible to return for the team’s first-round playoff matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. In his first season with the Devils, Cotter has recorded a career-high 16 goals and six assists in 79 games. Reuters
Marc McLaughlin Recalled from Utica Comets
In response to Cotter’s suspension, the Devils have recalled forward Marc McLaughlin from the Utica Comets. McLaughlin, 25, has appeared in 26 NHL games, all with the Boston Bruins, registering six goals and no assists. In the AHL, he has accumulated 26 goals and 37 assists in 183 games. Known for his strong defensive play, McLaughlin will now have an opportunity to contribute to the Devils’ lineup as they prepare for the postseason.
Cam Squires Assigned to Utica Comets
The Devils have also assigned forward Cam Squires to the Utica Comets. Squires, selected 122nd overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, recently completed a standout season with the Cape Breton Eagles in the QMJHL, posting 75 points in 58 games. His two-way play and speed make him a promising prospect for the Devils’ future.
Shane LaChance Signs Entry-Level Contract
Additionally, forward Shane LaChance has signed an entry-level contract with the Devils. LaChance, acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in a trade involving Trent Frederic, has been a key player for Boston University, recording 25 points in 32 games this season. The 21-year-old brings size and scoring ability to the Devils’ organization. NHL.com
