Veronica Swift

0

Having been known to the world as one of the most dazzling and versatile performers of her generation with “a miraculous voice, musical ability and technique, as well as an innate gift for entertaining a crowd” (Wall Street Journal), Veronica Swift showed in previous years that she is more than a jazz singer. During the 2023-25 years, Swift and her multi genre band performed for audiences all over the globe seeing a rising demand for her dynamic, electrifying performances. It was in this era that she was also given the honor of Knight in the order of arts and letters from the French Republic.
Her debut Mack Avenue award-winning release ‘Confessions’ (2019) secured her a spot at the podium amongst the greatest jazz singers of her generation. She then demonstrated her flare for conceptual cycles and keen arranging with her 2021 release ‘This Bitter Earth’ which not only gave a glimpse into her rock influences, but automatically touched up upon some of the harder truths of being a woman. On her most recent 2023 album, simply titled ‘Veronica Swift’, she spreads her sonic wings even further exploring a “TransGenre” concept that includes more expansive range of influences than ever before: French and Italian opera, European classical music, industrial and punk rock, funk, and vaudeville.
Swift’s recent collaboration with drummer/producer, Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls) allowed for her creativity to flourish, and as she continues her artistic journey, she brings this multi-genre experience to you along with the music from her upcoming original project titled DAME. She is joined on stage by Kyle Reinhart (guitar), Alexis Angel (keyboards/guitar), and Jonny Heinz (bass).

Michael Romeo formed Symphony X in New Jersey in 1994. The original lineup of the group included Thomas Miller (bass guitar), Rod Tyler (vocals), Jason Rullo (drums), and (keyboards). They released their self-titled debut later that same year. The next year they put out the follow-up The Damnation Game. 1995 also saw Tyler leave the group, his replacement coming in the personage of. Their next release came out in 1997. It was the critically acclaimed The Divine Wings of Tragedy. In addition to the critical praise, this disc became the group’s biggest commercial success to date. Before recording their next album, Rullo left the band. He was replaced by Thomas Walling. With this lineup, the group released Twilight in Olympus, which garnered both greater critical kudos and greater sales. In a unique turn of events, however, the band faced a new lineup change. Newcomer Walling and bassman Thomas Miller both decided that they were not up to touring for the album. The recently departed Rullo rethought his exodus and came back into the Symphony X fold. was brought in on bass for the duration of the tour. After the tour was over, the group found a permanent replacement in Mike LePond. This formation of the group released their fifth album in 2000 — V: The New Mythology Suite. The following year, Symphony X released their first live album, Live on the Edge of Forever, which captured performances from their 2000 European tour. In 2002, the band continued to mine mythology with their sixth studio album, The Odyssey, which was based on Homer’s epic of the same name. They band a bit of a break while its members released solo albums but came together again in 2007 with the released of Paradise Lost, a concept album based on Milton’s tale. Taking a break from mining the past, the band looked to the future for the theme of their next album. The result was 2011’s Iconoclast, which featured a darker tone and a cautionary story about machines taking over the world. After a global tour, the band took an extended break. They began working on new material in 2014. Their ninth studio offering, Underworld, was announced in May of 2015. Though not conceptual, it was loosely inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, particularly its first section, The Inferno. The album was released at the end of July. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

Jimmy Webb

0

An Evening with Jimmy Webb
Jimmy Webb, America’s Songwriter, has written songs that transcend generations and genres –think “Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Didn’t We.” This Motown-trained composer writes all of his own lyrics and music and is the only hit maker to have scored songs on the Pop, Country, R&B, Rap, Disco and New Age charts. During this Evening with Jimmy Webb, audiences will hear this multi-Grammy Award winner’s songs and experience his insightful and often humorous stories about his work with Glen Campbell, Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt (“Still Within the Sound of My Voice”), Art Garfunkel (“All I Know”), The Fifth Dimension (“Up, Up and Away”), The Highwaymen (“The Highwayman”), Kanye West (“Famous” features Webb’s “Do What You Gotta Do”), and more.
Jimmy Webb is the author of the memoir, The Cake and the Rain, and the “bible” of songwriting, Tunesmith: The Art of Songwriting. In 2019 Webb released a piano-only CD, SlipCover, featuring some of his favorite songs from his contemporaries; Billy Joel, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones and more.
“… A night with Jimmy at the keys is not unlike getting to hear George Gershwin or Cole Porter live. It’s hard to believe one guy could have written all these amazing songs…if you get a chance to see him live, grab it…”

Kathleen Edwards

0

For decades, Kathleen Edwards has been a cornerstone of North American roots music.
Since making her debut with 2002’s Failer, she’s spent the 21st century occupying the grey area between genres, swirling together her own mix of alt-country, folk, and heartland rock & roll. It’s a sound that has earned its creator more than a half-dozen Juno nominations, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Lucinda Williams — she’s opened the door for others, too, inspiring a new generation of artists who, like her, blur the boundaries between genre and generation.
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album’s warm, woozy sound — crystallized on radio hits like “Six O’Clock News” — quickly turned her into one of the era’s alt-country heroes. From the very start, though, Edwards’ music seemed to exist somewhere out of time, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for “Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.”
“No one knew what to call my type of music back then,” she says of those early years. “The Americana genre didn’t exist yet, so they couldn’t categorize me. I just made the kind of music I wanted to make.”
Edwards continued blazing her own trail with follow-up albums like Back to Me and Asking for Flowers. By the time Voyageur arrived in 2012, Americana very much did exist as a genre, and Edwards found herself riding a newfound commercial peak. The album reached Number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and Number 3 on Billboard’s Folk Albums chart. Even so, a busy decade on the road had left her exhausted. After touring in support of Voyageur’s release, Edwards left the music business altogether and moved to suburban Ontario, where she opened a coffee shop called — defiantly — “Quitters.”
“Before I turned 30, I toured the world and put out nearly four records, performed on TV, and had an incredible run,” she says of her first 10 years in the spotlight. “What’s interesting is that I walked away from all of it, too — and when I came back, I felt better than the person who put out Failer.”
By the late 2010s, Edwards felt recharged and revitalized. When a phone call arrived from Maren Morris, who was looking for songwriting partners for a new project, Edwards jumped at the chance to collaborate. The two musicians co-wrote “Good Woman,” which appeared on Morris’ Grammy-nominated album Girl in 2019. Back home in Canada, Edwards continued to write new material, eventually partnering with producer Ian Fitchuk for the album Total Freedom. Released in 2020, the album expanded her sound and her audience, boosted by two hit songs — “Options Open” and “Hard on Everyone” — that both reached the Top 30 on the Triple A chart in America. Total Freedom didn’t just mark her return to the music industry. It was a rebirth, too.
What’s next? New music, of course. She and Grammy-winner Jim Scott co-produced and released an album called Covers, which pays homage to some of her songwriting heroes – Tom Petty, REM, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen, et al. Edwards remains a fan of “ripping guitar riffs and good songs,” and she’s combining both into a follow-up album co-produced by Grammy-winners Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson that will showcase her legacy as well as her evolution.
She maintains a presence on the road, too, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes — including Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, and Bob Dylan — the next.
“The amount of things I’ve gone through might make someone else quit…but quitting doesn’t quite do it for me,” she says. “I can’t help but want to write great songs, connect with people, and see what’s ahead. I don’t love looking behind, even though it’s one of the ways we can see what we’ve done, so I’m looking forward.”

Al Stewart – The Farewell Tour with The Empty Pockets

0

After Al’s US tour in 2019 with his band The Empty Pockets, he spent most of 2020 and 2021 sidelined due the COVID-19 pandemic. But in 2022, he came back full force with a string of sold out shows in the United States and United Kingdom, and he even made his debut in Israel. In 2023, he’ll continue his trek with several shows throughout the United States. He will be playing his old favorites, like Year Of The Cat, Time Passages, On the Border, Nostradamus and Roads To Moscow, along with selections from his deep catalogue.
The Scottish-born singer-songwriter has released nearly 20 introspective and lyrically powerful records featuring brilliant backing musicians (Jimmy Page, Phil Collins, Richard Thompson, Peter White, etc.). His biggest platinum successes, “Year Of The Cat” and “Time Passages”, were released in 1976 & 1978 respectively. He’s had several top 20 singles, including the above-mentioned titles, as well as “On the Border” and “Song On The Radio”.
In Al’s own Words: “I’m just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records! It’s as simple as that really. I was always a huge music fan and originally, I had wanted to be Brian Jones and then Bob Dylan, but those two jobs were already taken. And in many ways, I’m still pretty much the same troubadour that I was back in 1965. I still get a kick out of hearing the Zombies, Hendrix or They Might be Giants on the radio.”

All-night, sold-out concerts during Jazzfest in New Orleans have featured sit ins by everyone from Lenny Kravitz & Steve Winwood (with whom Karl has recorded and toured) to avant garde luminaries Marc Ribot & Boyfriend. Chuck Leavell and Bernard Fowler (Karl’s bandmates in The Rolling Stones where Karl replaced the great Bobby Keys as saxophonist in 2014) have joined onstage and on record, as have Lukas Nelson, John Oates, Michael Franti, Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville, Anders Osborne, Big Daddy Kane, Roy Hargrove, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Joshua Redman, Marcus King, and Bernie Worrell, among others.

Tinsley Ellis

0

According to Atlanta-based blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Tinsley Ellis, his new, first-ever solo acoustic album, Naked Truth, is both “a departure and an arrival.” Ellis has been recording and travelling the world for over four decades, delivering his feral, guitar-fueled, original electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls, festivals, and clubs. Naked Truth is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Skip James, Son House, Robert Johnson and even Leo Kottke. To the casual fan, this might seem to be a new direction, but for Ellis, it’s an extension of his music, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make, and one that my longtime fans have been asking for,” he says, noting he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years. In the last 12 months, Ellis has already performed over 100 solo shows, many as co-bills with his Alligator label-mate Marcia Ball. “I’m having so much fun playing these shows,” he says.
On Naked Truth (his 21st album), Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs, including nine newly written originals. Naked Truth was produced by Ellis, with the foot-stomping cover of Son House’s Death Letter Blues produced by Atlanta roots musician Eddie 9V. The album was recorded live in the studio using Ellis’ beloved 1969 Martin D-35 (a gift from his father) and his 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Whether intricately fingerpicking the Martin or playing hair-raising slide on the National Steel, Ellis delivers each song with unvarnished intimacy.

The Weight Band

0

Performing their current album, Shines Like Gold, as well as classic songs of The Band, The Weight Band is led by Jim Weider, a 15-year former member of The Band and the Levon Helm Band. The Weight Band originated in 2013 inside the famed Woodstock barn of Levon Helm. Weider was inspired by Helm to carry on the musical legacy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group.
Years of touring have seen The Weight Band revive “The Woodstock Sound,” keeping the spirit of Americana/Roots Rock alive for audiences of all ages. They continue to keep the sound vibrant by releasing new music, evidenced by the album World Gone Mad (February 2018.) Their live set features Weight Band songs from the new album as well as fan favorites from The Band’s treasured catalog, including “Up On Cripple Creek,” “The Weight,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”
The Weight Band includes Brian Mitchell (The Levon Helm Band), Michael Bram (Jason Mraz), Matt Zeiner (Dickey Betts Band), and Albert Rogers (The Jim Weider Band). With a US and international tour schedule slated for 2019 and beyond, The Weight Band complements The Band’s timeless legacy while pushing the music forward for new audiences.
Billboard, Relix Magazine, and others have taken notice, as have generations of The Band fans who have yearned for new material since their last studio release almost 20 years ago. The Boston Globe proclaims World Gone Mad “strikes a chord between past & present,” and the Chicago Tribune says “The Weight carries on where The Band left off.” Goldmine Magazine cited World Gone Mad as one of the best indie albums of 2018, saying the group “effectively revives and recreates The Band’s original rustic sound as a successor [and] keeps that arcane spirit alive!”

Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Music of Warren Zevon

0

It’s been 20 years since the world lost one of its most gifted, respected, and haunted musicians. Warren Zevon bravely battled a rare form of cancer, writing, recording, and performing his music, right up to the last day of his ‘Dirty Life and Times’.
A generational songwriter, revered by industry peers, Warren enjoyed a cult following with limited commercial success. His huge mainstream hits, Werewolves of London and Lawyers, Guns & Money, are a small sample of a vast catalog of music that has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, the Turtles, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia and the evenings host, Pat Guadagno.
Pat’s recording of Zevon’s Don’t Let Us Get Sick became an international classic when it was featured in Showtime’s award-winning series, CALIFORNICATION.
To honor and celebrate the music of Warren Zevon, Guadagno has assembled an All-Star cast that includes Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer Vini Lopez, Award winning singer-songwriter-activist Arlan Feiles and RCA recording artist Jake Thistle.
Anyone who has been to one of Guadagno’s musical celebrations, BobFest (Bob Dylan), A Marvelous Night (Van Morrison), or Heart of Saturday Night (Tom Waits) Souvenirs (John Prine), Leonard Cohen (Hallelujah) knows to expect a passionate, reverent delivery of the music of Warren Zevon, Mr. Bad Example.
