The Sensational Soul Cruisers

0

The Sensational Soul Cruisers are not just another 11-man vocal harmony group with horns. While it is still sometimes possible to find a band featuring a similar line up of instruments, it is unlikely that you will ever find another that performs with as much energy, passion, and talent as these guys. From their humble beginnings rehearsing in Freehold Borough at the chicken coops on Route 33 to the basement of the Cycle Shop on Throckmorton Street, this band has come a long way from its “Eddie and the Cruisers” days to become one of New Jersey’s best kept secrets.
Under the tutelage of legendary Jersey Shore sax player Screamin’ Steve Barlotta, who has been the captain of this fantastic soul cruise for over 30 years, who has catapulted this band from the recesses of a dingy basement to over 200 performances a year while capturing the true essence of the Jersey Shore sound and its true R&B roots. Fortunately for those of us that feel that the sound of classic Philly Soul, Motown, Disco, Stax, and the music of The Temptations, Four Tops, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, The Trammps and other such groups was and still is some of the best music ever recorded or played live, there will be plenty of chances to see the Sensational Soul Cruisers perform this year and for many years to come. While the band travels to and plays concerts in theaters, clubs, public festivals, and private events throughout the country, they will be spending quite a bit of time up & down the east coast this year.
Over the past 3 decades the Soul Cruisers have been fortunate enough to grace the stage with many great artist from Bruce Springsteen, Little Anthony and The Imperials, Gloria Gaynor, Gary US Bonds, John Cafferty, Southside Johnny, The Emotions, Bon Jovi, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder. As well as being the long time favorite house band at New York City’s famed Copacabana.
Band Members:
Screamin’ Steve Barlotta – Tenor Saxophone
Stan Tartas – Bass Guitar
Sir Michael Winstanley – Keyboards
Matt Curran – Drums
Dr. Steve Hyde– Trumpet

Atlanta Rhythm Section

0

The Atlanta Rhythm Section… ARS… In the annals of rock and roll, where do they fit? They put out 15 albums of excellent original material and consistently put on entertaining live shows-both of which helped establish a broad if not huge fan base. They had some big hits and have been a major player in the Southern Rock scene. But is that the whole story? In some circles, maybe. But for those who’ve really gotten to know their music over the years, there’s a lot more to the story.
ARS was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers – carrying the mantle of “Southern Rock” in the late 70s. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it may have made sense at the time. But performing songs that were more musically diverse and having hits that had a softer, pop sound, the “Southern Rock” label was a mixed blessing and many of their unique musical accomplishments became lost in a genre that has lived on to this day-but never really fit ARS.
An Alternate View
Here’s some other ways to look at ARS. They weren’t out to be rock and roll stars-they were accomplished studio musicians working as a group. They were said to be more influenced by music coming out of England than other music in the South. They shared musical stylings with the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac-both in the quality of songwriting and recorded performances. They were excellent musicians who tried to stretch themselves-think Steely Dan or Little Feat. In many ways, these associations make as much or more sense than any grouping with their Southern Rock kindred.
But the music of ARS only reached a mass audience on a couple of occasions. The result: an outstanding song catalog and the talented men responsible for it have been largely overlooked. When those songs are heard, and those talents recognized, the case can be made that ARS are the epitome of all the good things that the phrase “classic rock” implies.

A Peter White Christmas

0

Make your list and check it twice! This holiday concert is more than just nice!! A Peter White Christmas with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala is coming to town. Contemporary jazz lovers eagerly await this annual fun filled concert, which has packed fans into halls and arenas coast-to-coast year after year.
Peter White is an extraordinary and fluent acoustic guitarist whose skills are world-renowned. Revered saxophonist Mindi Abair returns again with her dynamic vigor ready to captivate audiences far & wide. Vincent Ingala is no stranger to contemporary jazz audiences—his charisma, energy, and musicianship will put a smile on anyone’s face.
Peter recalls, “My earliest memories of Christmas were probably not much different from many other people: snowflakes, tinsel, Santa Claus, reindeer, and the opening of presents surrounded by family. As a child, my father taught me to play Christmas music on my first instrument, the recorder, and my love for Christmas music has endured throughout the years. I hope this tour will be an opportunity for many Smooth Jazz fans to enjoy their favorite Christmas songs in a family setting. You know, I might even bring my recorder!” Peter White’s classic acoustic guitar style can be enjoyed through an ever-growing and best-selling catalog, including his latest release “Light of Day” (2025).
“Growing up, my family would get together for Christmas every year” Mindi reminisces. “My grandmother would cook oyster stuffing and rhubarb pie, and we’d all play and sing together. I still make a rhubarb pie every year in her honor. My grandmother gave me great advice early on, ‘If you play the piano you can be the life of any party!’ She was an opera singer and would sit and play piano and sing Christmas songs. My father would take over and play more rock/blues/jazz versions of Christmas songs and we’d all sing. And of course I’d pull out my sax and play along with my father on piano. What an amazing way to grow up, with music surrounding me, and weaving into my life so seamlessly from a young age.” Mindi’s latest release “I Can’t Wait for Christmas” (2024) on Pretty Good For A Girl Records is a 10-song collection of holiday classics that transports listeners straight to the heart of the holiday season, blending timeless classics with fresh, soulful originality.
Vincent Ingala “I can vividly remember not being able to fall asleep waiting for Santa Claus to arrive on Christmas Eve. Somehow though, he always managed to get the job done while I was sleeping, and before I could catch him! I remember feeling extra special that Santa would place all of the gifts around the fireplace like a display, as opposed to them being wrapped under the Christmas tree. I would sneak downstairs multiple times with my flashlight to get a sneak peek before the sun would rise on Christmas morning! Memories such as these I will always continue to hold in my heart, and they are what makes Christmas a very magical time of the year.” Vincent’s latest release is “Escape with Me” (2024) on Shanachie Records.

Donna the Buffalo

0

Donna The Buffalo is not just a band, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Telluride, Austin City Limits Festival, Merle Fest, and Philadelphia Folk Festival.
They’ve opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Los Lobos, Little Feat, Jim Lauderdale, Rusted Root, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics.

The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg, New York as four days of music, art, dance and movement workshops, including nightly dinners and dances.

The Amish Outlaws

0

It is a little-known fact that most Amish practice a tradition similar to the Christian “Confirmation” and Jewish “Bar Mitzvah” called “Rumspringa” (literal translation: “running around”) in which Amish children at the age of 16 have an opportunity to live free of the strict Amish code of conduct before deciding if they want to come back and be baptized into the Amish church.
Surprisingly, virtually all of the youths return.
But sometimes they don’t.
Four out of the original six members of The Amish Outlaws were born and raised in Lancaster, PA and had a strict Amish upbringing. No electricity from land lines, no alcohol, no musical instruments, but their spirits were too wild for the Amish lifestyle. Once they trampled in the Devil’s Playground, there was no turning back. In the years since Rumspringa, the members of the Amish Outlaws have become very well acclimated to the pleasures and vices of the modern world… music, most of all. Hip hop, rock, country, metal, disco, opera. There is no genre they do not touch upon.
Thus, with a bold lust for life and a fire for music and performance that can only come from 16 years of repression, The Amish Outlaws were unleashed upon the world.

An Evening with Acoustic Alchemy

0

It’s been quite a while since the release of the last album, and in that time an awful lot has happened.” is the opening line from Greg Carmichael’s notes for the band’s brand new album, 33 1/3 , and never a truer word has been written. The last studio album from the band, ‘Roseland’, was released in 2011, followed by a live double album, ‘Live In London’, in 2014. “It has almost become a running joke, “ says Miles Gilderdale, “after every single show we are constantly being asked, ‘When’s the new album coming out?’ It’s nice to finally have an answer for them.”
There are two main reasons for the amount of time fans have had to wait for this album. The first is that the band feel very passionately that you should only write and album when you have something to say. “We’re quite lucky in that respect, “ says Miles, “we don’t have a record label breathing down our necks telling us we need to put out something every year.” Greg; “ For us, the only time we even consider going into the studio is when we have some material that we really believe in. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had the space to even think about being creative.” Greg’s wife Jan was tragically and suddenly struck with meningitis shortly before an American tour in 2015, “It’s one of those things that you hear about, but never imagine happening to you or your loved ones. One day she was absolutely fine and the next we were in hospital with Jan in a coma and the doctors telling me there was a chance she would never come out of it.” Fortunately she did recover, though the ferocity of the infection has left her permanently affected. It’s just incredible that something can do that to someone so quickly, so as you imagine I couldn’t even think about writing or playing.”
With the help of guitarists Steve Oliver and Nate Najar, Acoustic Alchemy continued to tour the United States with Greg flying in as and when he could, “I couldn’t believe how great they were. I’m not sure I could do that, just take a whole set of songs and learn someone else’s parts and just go up and play it so incredibly well. I’m really grateful to them, and Jan’s incredible strength and determination have been such an inspiration, and that’s what made me want to get back to writing.”
For over three decades the band have been at the forefront of contemporary jazz, even if the band’s signature eclectic mix of styles has meant they have never comfortably fit snugly into any one genre; “We’ve had a lot of labels over the years, at the start there were all these names flying around like New Adult Contemporary, New Age music, and then it became Smooth Jazz, but we’ve never really thought about ourselves as being in any one particular genre. We just make music we like.” Says Greg, “At the core it’s always been about one simple concept: the sound of the nylon and steel guitars working together, but that leaves a lot of scope for exploring all sorts of musical ideas.”
That is certainly the case with 33 1/3, and album which touches on Jazz (such as the track ‘A Little Closer’), Blues (‘Blues for Mr. Mu’ being a tribute to the late Steely Dan founder Walter Becker), Caribbean (the band have a long history of incorporating the sounds of the Islands into their songs, and ‘The Girl With A Plan’ follows that tradition from such past hits as ‘Mr. Chow’ and ‘Jamaica Heartbeat’), Eastern (found in the opening track of the album ‘East of Babylon’) and even Classical music (‘Allemande’ and ‘Prelude in D Minor’ two pieces that Greg has always loved playing since his early days at the London College of Music), and yet with all the diversity of styles, the album manages to still sound like classic Acoustic Alchemy, as Miles explains, “The band has changed a lot over the years, different personnel, different eras, different influences, but we always somehow make it sound like Acoustic Alchemy. I think every band tries to do that, to make something that’s new and interesting, but the fans still hear it and go, that’s them!”

Andy Bell of Erasure: Ten Crowns Tour

0

When you reach a milestone in your life, what’s the best way to mark it? By embracing it, glorying in it – crowning it, in fact – with an album of euphoric songs produced and polished in Nashville, of course!
The name of Andy Bell’s third solo album, Ten Crowns – like its cover art, featuring his head on a glistening gold coin – is making Andy smile today: “It sounds like a pub!”, he jokes. But behind that title lies ten songs of dazzling, joyous pop, inspired by the dancefloor and gospel, completed in the year he turned 60.
The name also refers to the tarot, he says: “The ten crowns on the tree of life, which is a very powerful card to have. And I’d just got my crowns on my teeth done in Miami when I was trying to think about a title!”, he laughs.
Ten Crowns marks a properly majestic moment in Andy Bell’s forty-year career. His joy about what that holds, and where it can go, clearly excites him. “It’s my third sort of solo record [following 2005’s Electric Blue and 2010’s Non-Stop] and in Erasure, our third album was our most successful out of all that we’ve done, so maybe I’m taking that spirit with me!”
Travelling into new dimensions and possibilities with gospel in the heart and dancing in the soul clearly suits him. Ten Crowns is Andy Bell imperial, gleaming, ready for his coronation.
