After an unimaginable 584 days held captive by Hamas, the 21-year-old Israeli-American was welcomed home with an outpouring of love and support that resonated across the Garden State. It was a moment of profound relief and jubilation for a community that had tirelessly campaigned for his freedom.

Edan, a graduate of Tenafly High School, was just 19 when he was abducted on October 7, 2023, while serving in the Israel Defense Forces. What followed were 19 months of harrowing captivity, much of it spent in the dark, oppressive confines of underground tunnels, deprived of daylight, proper sustenance, and the most basic dignities. He endured starvation and physical hardship, losing a significant amount of weight, and was even forced to appear in propaganda videos, a testament to the immense psychological pressure he faced. His journey through captivity saw him moved between various hidden locations, including mosques and schools, highlighting the inhumane conditions he suffered.

His release on May 12, 2025, a deal brokered through persistent diplomatic efforts, marked the beginning of his long-awaited journey back to freedom. After initial medical attention and an emotional reunion with his family in Israel, the moment New Jersey had yearned for arrived on June 19. Edan touched down at Newark International Airport, and from there, a powerful procession guided him home to Tenafly.

The anticipation in Tenafly was palpable. Hundreds, even thousands, of residents lined the streets, a sea of American and Israeli flags waving in unison. Cheers erupted as his motorcade slowly moved through the town, chants of “Edan!” filling the air. Homemade signs adorned with messages of welcome and resilience dotted the landscape, reflecting a community united in hope. Edan, visibly moved, beamed and waved from his vehicle, reaching out to high-five and shake hands with those who had come to greet him. Police officers saluted as he passed, a gesture of profound respect for a young man who had faced unimaginable adversity with unwavering spirit.

The welcome was more than just a celebration; it was a deeply emotional testament to the powerful bonds within the community. Many residents spoke of Edan as “our child,” emphasizing the collective pain and unwavering prayers that had accompanied his family throughout his ordeal. While the joy of his return is immense, it also serves as a poignant reminder that other hostages remain captive. The community’s resilience, however, shines through, as they continue to advocate for the safe return of all those still held.
