Few musicians can claim founding roles in three genuinely influential bands across a single career, let alone bands that helped invent entire subgenres along the way. Jim Messina can, and on Tuesday, November 10, that remarkable history arrives at The Vogel for an evening spanning country rock, folk rock, and soft rock’s biggest commercial moments.

Messina’s path started as producer and audio engineer for Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield, before he ultimately joined the band as bassist. When the group disbanded in 1968, Messina and bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco, with Messina on lead guitar helping define an entirely new genre, country rock, across three successful albums. Ready for another change, he returned to his real passion, producing, signing on as an independent producer with Columbia Records.

A Chance Meeting That Became a Global Phenomenon

In November 1970, Columbia asked Messina to work with an unknown singer named Kenny Loggins, helping prepare him for his debut record and touring. The two discovered a genuine musical chemistry, and what started as Messina simply sitting in on the sessions turned into a full creative partnership. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In, released in November 1971, launched what became an accidental duo, and over the following seven years, Loggins and Messina released eight hit albums, racked up scores of hit songs, and sold more than 16 million records combined.

Jim Messina’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super groups, a vibrant solo career, and scores of producing and engineering credits.

A Solo Career That’s Kept Going Strong

Since Loggins and Messina’s run ended, Messina has continued recording, performing, and touring steadily as a solo artist, keeping a genuinely active national schedule that regularly brings him through intimate rooms across the country. Longtime fans consistently praise how well his voice and guitar playing have held up, and audiences at recent stops have specifically noted the pleasant surprise of Messina personally coming out to greet the crowd after his sets, a genuinely rare gesture from an artist with this much history behind him.
