On May 8, 2025, Grammy-winning artist Meshell Ndegeocello will perform her acclaimed work, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, at Montclair State University’s Alexander Kasser Theater. This performance is part of the Peak Performances series and is set to begin at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available through the Peak Performances website.
No More Water is a profound musical tribute to the influential writer and activist James Baldwin, commemorating his centennial. The project began as a theatrical piece, Can I Get a Witness? The Gospel of James Baldwin, commissioned by Harlem Stage in 2016. It has since evolved into a full-length album released on August 2, 2024, Baldwin’s 100th birthday. The album blends elements of gospel, jazz, funk, and spoken word to explore themes of race, identity, and social justice. Contributors include poet Staceyann Chin, writer Hilton Als, and vocalist Justin Hicks.
The upcoming performance at Montclair State University will showcase the album’s rich tapestry of music and spoken word. Attendees can expect a dynamic and immersive experience that reflects Baldwin’s enduring influence on contemporary discourse. The event is anticipated to resonate deeply with audiences, offering both artistic expression and social commentary.
