Spring Sports Wrap-Up: A Season to Remember as Allison Lee’s Silver Medal Moment Caps Off a Thrilling Season for Garden State High School Sports

As the spring season of New Jersey high school sports wraps up, the track at Pennsauken High School bore witness to a defining moment for one of the state’s rising stars in distance running. Allison Lee, a junior at West Windsor-Plainsboro North, proved she belongs among New Jersey’s elite with a stunning second-place finish in the 3200-meter run at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions—a feat that not only earned her a silver medal, but also cemented her status as one of the toughest competitors in the state.

👉 Explore more New Jersey high school sports moments here

From Missing the Cut to Medaling on the Big Stage

Last year, Lee missed out on the Meet of Champions, which left her with something to prove heading into this season. And prove it she did.

On a scorching Wednesday afternoon with temperatures testing every athlete’s stamina, Lee delivered a gutsy performance that showed not just her physical ability, but her mental toughness. Clocking in at 10:31.91, she finished just a few seconds behind Ocean Township’s standout freshman Leah Starkey, who crossed the line at 10:28.18.

“I’m really happy with the choices I made in this race,” Lee said post-race. “There were a lot of points where I had to mentally dig in. I’m just glad I stayed in it and kicked hard on that last lap.”

Her strategy? Patience, poise, and positioning. Lee trailed closely behind Starkey for much of the race, hanging on through every lap until Starkey pulled away over the final 1600 meters. Even though she couldn’t close the gap, Lee’s silver-medal run marked a huge personal and athletic victory.

A Champion’s Mentality

Lee didn’t just run a fast time—she ran with intention. The CVC champion in both the 1600 and 3200-meter races this season, she’s become known not only for her speed, but for her drive. And even in the face of stiff competition, she took the high road, showing tremendous respect for Starkey:

“I respect her so much,” said Lee. “She took the race out hard and wasn’t afraid to lead. That pushed me, and this race wouldn’t have been what it was without her.”

Lee’s coach, Brian Gould, echoed that sentiment. “She’s worked so hard for so long. This is a great finish to a great season and a great school year. I just hope she takes a moment to enjoy what she’s accomplished before setting her sights on next year.”

And that’s exactly what she’s planning to do—before getting back to work, of course.

“It’s great to have races like this under your belt. They give you momentum,” Lee said. “I’m excited to take this experience and head into cross country with ambitious goals.”

Track and Field Highlights: More Garden State Glory

Lee’s performance was just one part of a thrilling day at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions, which saw:

  • Record-breaking performances in the 1600 meters, where a phenom shattered a state record.
  • Big wins from top-tier athletes like Keating and Shue, who dominated in their respective events.
  • Heartfelt stories of perseverance and comebacks across the track and field program.

From the sprints to the pole vault, New Jersey athletes continue to prove they are among the most talented and resilient in the country.

The sectional championships featured thrilling matchups with powerhouses like Westfield and Bridgewater-Raritan advancing deep into the tournament.

Stars shined on the diamond with teams like Indian Hills, South Brunswick, and Woodbridge chasing championship dreams. Meanwhile, Gabby Shadek of IHA broke the all-time state home run record, setting a new standard for excellence.

⛳ Golf

🥍 Lacrosse

Sectional quarterfinals wrapped up with explosive performances from top players and teams, setting the stage for fierce semifinal matchups.

🎓 Honors and Awards

New Jersey also celebrated academic excellence with the NJSIAA Scholar Athlete Awards, while Rutherford High School earned Level 1 status on the NFHS School Honor Roll, showcasing the balance between athletics and academics.

A Winning State: New Jersey’s Education System Sets the Bar

Beyond sports, it’s been a banner year for New Jersey as a whole. The state was recently named the top-ranked in the nation for education by U.S. News & World Report. This recognition is built on:

With a culture that supports both athletic achievement and academic excellence, it’s no wonder New Jersey continues to lead the way.

No Crash Ahead: 2025 Home Prices to See Modest Gains

Across the U.S.—and especially here in New Jersey—many homeowners and potential buyers have been holding their breath, waiting to see whether housing prices would fall sharply. But according to leading economists, that dramatic drop isn’t coming.

In fact, home prices are projected to increase by 3% in 2025, thanks to a combination of limited housing supply, low mortgage delinquency rates, and continued job growth.

Despite a rocky start to the year and reports of increased seller price cuts, the fundamentals of the market remain strong. Here’s why:

  • Inventory remains tight. New construction has not yet caught up with demand, particularly in urban-suburban crossover areas like northern New Jersey and parts of Central Jersey.
  • Delinquencies are low. Most homeowners are not in distress, reducing the risk of foreclosures flooding the market and depressing prices.
  • Mortgage rates are expected to ease. Forecasts suggest rates could dip to around 6.4% by the end of the year, which would breathe new life into buyer activity.

Home sales are expected to rise, too, with existing-home transactions predicted to grow by 6% and new-home sales jumping by 10%. That means more movement, more listings, and more opportunities—whether you’re buying, selling, or investing.

What This Means for New Jersey Homebuyers and Sellers

For homebuyers, especially first-timers, the second half of 2025 may offer a more manageable entry point. If mortgage rates ease as projected, buying power will increase—allowing more flexibility even as prices rise modestly.

For sellers, the message is clear: now is a strong time to list, especially in high-demand areas like Bergen, Hudson, Union, and Monmouth counties. While bidding wars may not be as fierce as they were in early 2022, solid offers and quick closes remain very achievable—particularly for homes that are well-priced and move-in ready.

For investors and developers, projects like Hudson House demonstrate that adaptive reuse and mixed-use developments remain attractive, especially in commuter-friendly markets with room for upscale housing and lifestyle amenities.

Final Thoughts: A Balanced Market with Room to Grow

While the national housing market is always subject to global and macroeconomic factors, New Jersey’s local dynamics are grounded in long-term stability, economic growth, and geographic appeal. The state’s proximity to New York City, strong public transit, and diverse housing stock make it one of the most sought-after places to live in the Northeast.

So whether you’re following the sale of a landmark development like Hudson House or tracking broader pricing trends, one thing is clear: the Garden State’s real estate future looks far more stable than stormy.

Explore New Jersey Politics Today. Turnpike Authority Decision. Gubernatorial Candidates Respond. Mikie Sherrill. Booker vs. Cruz. ICE Operations Across NJ

As New Jersey approaches its 2025 gubernatorial election, the political landscape is charged with urgency and transformation. Voters are grappling with rising costs, shifting political dynamics, and a reevaluation of leadership. In this detailed analysis, we delve into the key issues and figures shaping the state’s political future.

Affordability at the Forefront: Gubernatorial Candidates Propose Solutions

With the June 10 primary fast approaching, affordability has emerged as the central theme in the gubernatorial race. Voters across New Jersey are expressing concerns over escalating property taxes, housing costs, and energy expenses. Candidates are responding with a variety of proposals aimed at alleviating these financial pressures.

Democratic Candidates:

  • Mikie Sherrill has outlined a comprehensive plan to address affordability, focusing on expanding affordable housing, reforming the tax credit system, and increasing funding for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Her approach emphasizes regional coordination and modernizing the state’s affordable housing infrastructure.en.wikipedia.org
  • Steven Fulop, Mayor of Jersey City, has proposed a statewide transportation agenda that includes expanding NJ Transit services, introducing congestion pricing similar to Manhattan’s model, and enhancing the PATH system’s integration with NJ Transit. He also advocates for reducing in-person transactions at the Motor Vehicle Commission to streamline services. en.wikipedia.org

Republican Candidates:

  • Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, has pledged to reverse policies he deems restrictive, such as sanctuary state measures, and to reduce taxes by 2% annually through waste elimination. He has secured an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who praised him as a “true champion” capable of shifting the state from Democratic to Republican control.
  • Mario Kranjac, the mayor of a Democrat-leaning town, has positioned himself as a political outsider. Endorsed by Newt Gingrich, he advocates for tax cuts, term limits, and a focus on education reform. His platform emphasizes reducing government waste and opposing federal overreach.

As the election nears, the debate over affordability continues to dominate, with each candidate presenting distinct visions for the state’s economic future.

Mikie Sherrill: Redefining the ‘Establishment’ Narrative

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill’s bid for governor has sparked discussions about the evolving nature of political establishment in New Jersey. Critics label her as the “establishment” candidate, but her career trajectory suggests a more nuanced position.

Sherrill first entered politics by flipping New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District from Republican to Democratic control, defeating a long-standing incumbent. Her background as a Navy veteran and federal prosecutor resonated with voters seeking a departure from traditional political figures.

While she has garnered support from established Democratic leaders like LeRoy Jones and Kevin McCabe, Sherrill’s approach emphasizes collaboration and reform. She advocates for modernizing the state’s affordable housing system, enhancing transportation infrastructure, and ensuring environmental protections.

Her campaign reflects a blend of experience and a commitment to progressive change, challenging the conventional definitions of political establishment.

Legal Precedent: NJ Supreme Court Upholds Turnpike Authority’s Bid Rejection

In a significant legal development, the New Jersey Supreme Court upheld the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s (NJTA) decision to reject a bid from El Sol Contracting for a bridge redecking project. The court ruled that the rejection was not arbitrary or unreasonable, affirming the NJTA’s authority in procurement decisions. law.justia.com

This ruling underscores the importance of adherence to procedural requirements in public contracting and may influence future bid disputes.cohenseglias.com

National Spotlight: Booker and Cruz Clash Over Immigration Policies

Senators Cory Booker and Ted Cruz engaged in a heated exchange over immigration policies, highlighting the stark contrasts between their political ideologies. Booker, representing New Jersey, emphasized the need for humane immigration reform, while Cruz advocated for stricter enforcement measures.

The debate underscored the broader national divide on immigration and showcased New Jersey’s role in shaping federal policy discussions.

Coordinated Enforcement: Multiple Agencies Participate in ICE Operations Across NJ

Multiple federal and state agencies have collaborated in recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across New Jersey. These coordinated efforts reflect ongoing tensions between state policies and federal immigration enforcement strategies.

New Jersey’s stance on sanctuary policies and immigrant rights continues to be a contentious issue, influencing both local governance and national debates on immigration reform.

A Pivotal Moment for New Jersey’s Political Landscape

The 2025 gubernatorial election presents a critical juncture for New Jersey. Voters face choices that will shape the state’s economic policies, social justice initiatives, and environmental strategies. The candidates’ platforms reflect a diverse array of approaches to addressing the challenges facing the Garden State.en.wikipedia.org

As the election approaches, it is essential for residents to engage with the candidates’ proposals and consider the long-term implications of their decisions. New Jersey’s political future is at a crossroads, and the outcome of this election will set the course for the state’s development in the years to come.

A New Chapter for Atlantic City: Foya Development Launches Affordable Homeownership Project

Atlantic City is turning a bold new page with a transformative effort that aims to empower residents through the most impactful form of economic stability: homeownership. Foya Development Group, under the leadership of visionary entrepreneur Adenah Bayoh, has launched a groundbreaking affordable housing initiative in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. This project marks a significant step forward in bringing accessible, sustainable homeownership opportunities to local families—and it’s exactly the kind of progress Atlantic City needs.

Building More Than Homes—Building Futures

This isn’t just about new buildings; it’s about building brighter futures. For too long, homeownership has felt out of reach for many working-class residents in Atlantic City, where economic inequality and housing instability have been ongoing challenges. This new initiative will not only create affordable housing units but also offer pathways to financial empowerment, neighborhood revitalization, and community pride.

Through this project, residents will have access to homes designed with both affordability and quality in mind—homes they can truly call their own. Foya Development’s mission goes beyond bricks and mortar. It’s about creating spaces where families can thrive, build generational wealth, and take ownership of their community’s future.

A Leader with a Vision for Change

At the heart of this initiative is Adenah Bayoh, a name synonymous with innovation, empowerment, and impact. Bayoh brings a deeply personal understanding of what it means to overcome adversity and succeed. Her leadership of Foya Development Group reflects a commitment to inclusive growth, housing equity, and reimagining what urban development can look like when it prioritizes people over profit.

This Atlantic City project is part of a broader effort by Bayoh and her team to invest in underserved neighborhoods and give residents a real stake in the revitalization process.

A Turning Point for Atlantic City

As Atlantic City continues to redefine itself beyond the casino image, initiatives like this show a different side of the city—one that’s focused on resilient communities, economic diversity, and long-term opportunity. Local leaders, advocates, and residents are rallying around this project as a catalyst for change, one that could set the standard for future development across New Jersey.

The homes built through this initiative aren’t just providing shelter—they’re laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive Atlantic City.

What’s Next?

Construction is expected to begin soon, with details about income eligibility, application processes, and homeownership support services to be announced. Community members are encouraged to stay engaged, attend upcoming informational sessions, and learn how they or someone they know might benefit from this once-in-a-generation opportunity.

This project is also sparking broader conversations about affordable housing and development across the state. Explore more cutting-edge initiatives shaping New Jersey’s future in our dedicated Cutting Edge section, where we spotlight innovation that makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Why This Matters

Affordable homeownership isn’t just a real estate issue—it’s a justice issue, a health issue, and a cornerstone of thriving communities. With leaders like Adenah Bayoh at the helm and the support of the state’s community-focused programs, Atlantic City is proving that transformational change is not only possible—it’s already happening.

Environmental Advocates and Fishermen Unite to Challenge Empire Wind Project

In a bold move to protect marine life and coastal communities, a coalition of environmental groups and commercial fishermen has filed a federal lawsuit aimed at halting the Empire Wind offshore wind project. The legal action, initiated by organizations including Protect Our Coast New Jersey, Clean Ocean Action, and ACK for Whales, highlights growing concerns over the long-term ecological impact of large-scale offshore wind developments along the Atlantic coast.

What’s at Stake?

The Empire Wind project, proposed off the coast of New Jersey and New York, is one of several major offshore wind initiatives intended to accelerate the shift toward renewable energy. While many support clean energy solutions, opponents argue that these developments are moving forward without sufficient research into how they might affect ocean ecosystems, commercial fisheries, and marine mammals—particularly endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale.

The plaintiffs claim that the project has not undergone adequate environmental review and may violate federal protections, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.

Voices from the Shore

Fishermen have long depended on these waters for their livelihoods, and many feel that their voices have been drowned out in the race to go green. “We’re not against clean energy,” say members of the fishing community. “But we are against reckless development that threatens the very environment it claims to save.”

Environmental advocates echo this sentiment. Their lawsuit asserts that fast-tracking projects like Empire Wind without a thorough, transparent process could lead to irreversible damage to marine life and the ocean floor.

A Crossroads for Clean Energy and Conservation

This lawsuit represents more than just a legal battle—it’s part of a larger conversation about how to balance the urgent need for renewable energy with the equally important need to preserve biodiversity and protect long-standing industries.

Supporters of the lawsuit are calling for a pause on wind development until more comprehensive studies are conducted. They believe that with smarter planning, it’s possible to transition to clean energy without sacrificing the health of our oceans or the economic well-being of coastal communities.

For those passionate about sustainability and the future of New Jersey’s natural resources, this case marks a critical moment. It’s sparking much-needed debate about how energy infrastructure should evolve while respecting both nature and those who depend on it.

The Bigger Picture

The movement to challenge the Empire Wind project is gaining attention far beyond state borders, as coastal communities up and down the Atlantic grapple with similar concerns. From whale migration routes to underwater noise pollution, the potential risks of offshore wind are now under greater scrutiny.

🔥 Bring the Sizzle Home with Hibachi Vegetables

If you’ve ever gathered around a hot hibachi grill, you know it’s not just about the theatrics — it’s about the flavor. And while the steak or shrimp might get the spotlight, the vegetables are the real showstoppers. Buttery, garlicky, and perfectly seasoned, hibachi vegetables are the unsung heroes of Japanese steakhouse dining.

With Jersey Girl Cooks’ simple and satisfying Hibachi Vegetables recipe, you can recreate that same restaurant magic right at home — no flaming onion volcano required. This quick-cooking dish combines fresh zucchini, mushrooms, and onions in a buttery soy-garlic sauce that packs a savory punch.

It’s the perfect side for grilled meats, noodles, or even on its own over rice. And with just a handful of ingredients, it’s weeknight dinner gold.

Hibachi Vegetables

If you’ve ever sat around a sizzling hibachi grill, you know the vegetables are just as crave-worthy as the steak or shrimp. These hibachi vegetables are buttery, garlicky, and perfectly seasoned—bringing that Japanese steakhouse flavor straight to your own kitchen. This quick, flavorful side, is a must-make recipe.

Hibachi Vegetables topped with sesame seeds in a cast iron skillet.

Our local hibachi restaurant is always a good time. The chefs put on a show, the food never disappoints, and everyone has their favorite part—whether it’s the fried rice, the Yum-Yum sauce, or the sizzling steak and shrimp. But me? I’m all about the vegetables. They’re buttery, garlicky, and packed with umami flavor, with just the right balance of tenderness and crunch. I could honestly eat a whole plate and skip everything else.

The good news is, you don’t have to wait for a special night out to enjoy them. Hibachi vegetables are surprisingly easy to make at home and pair well with so many meals. Whether you’re serving grilled chicken, teriyaki beef, or just want a quick veggie stir-fry, this recipe is a great one to keep in your weekly rotation.

Ingredients

Ingredients needed for hibachi vegetables.
  • Olive Oil – Or use your favorite light, neutral flavored oil.
  • Garlic – Use fresh garlic for the best flavor. Mincing it finely helps it distribute throughout the dish.
  • Onion – A yellow or white onion works well. Slice it into even strips so it cooks at the same rate as the other veggies.
  • Carrots – Julienne or thinly slice for quick, even cooking. Pre-cut matchstick carrots can save time.
  • Mushrooms – White or cremini mushrooms both work. Slice them evenly so they brown nicely without getting soggy.
  • Broccoli – Cut into small, uniform florets so they cook quickly but still have a little bite.
  • Soy Sauce – Adds that classic umami flavor. Use low sodium if you’re watching salt intake, or tamari or coconut aminos for a gluten-free option.
  • Unsalted Butter – Butter gives the veggies a rich flavor. I prefer to use unsalted butter because soy sauce can be quite salty.
  • Sesame Seeds – Toasted sesame seeds add a nutty crunch. They’re optional but add a nice finishing touch.
  • Salt and Black Pepper – Season to taste at the end. Start light if your soy sauce is salty.

See recipe card below for exact quantities and instructions.

Instructions

Garlic is browned in a skillet.
  1. Step 1: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Vegetables are cooked in a cast iron skillet until crisp tender.
  1. Step 2: Add sliced onion and carrots, cook for 2 minutes. Then add mushrooms and broccoli. Stir-fry for another 4–5 minutes until tender but still crisp.
Soy sauce and other seasonings are added to sautéed vegetables.
  1. Step 3: Add soy sauce and butter. Stir everything well until the butter melts and coats the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Hibachi-style vegetables are served with a spoon.
  1. Step 4: Sprinkle veggies with sesame seeds and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve while hot. This is great next to grilled meats and/or rice.

Hint: Slice all the vegetables to uniform sizes for even cooking.

Variations/ Substitutions

  • Add Zucchini – Zucchini is a popular hibachi veggie that cooks quickly and absorbs flavor well. Slice into half moons or strips.
  • Use Bell Peppers – Red, yellow, or orange peppers add color and sweetness to the mix.
  • Swap the Sauce – Try teriyaki or a drizzle of hoisin sauce instead of plain soy sauce for a different flavor.
  • Spice It Up – Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a squirt of sriracha for some heat.
  • Make It a Meal – Toss in cooked chicken, shrimp, or tofu to turn it into a main dish.
  • Add Baby Corn or Snow Peas – For a more stir-fry style dish with added crunch.

🍌 Cozy Up to Banana Bread Overnight Oats

Now let’s talk breakfast. If you love the comforting flavors of banana bread but don’t have time to bake in the morning, these Banana Bread Overnight Oats are a total game changer. Creamy, naturally sweet, and full of warm cinnamon spice, they taste like dessert — but they’re built for your busiest mornings.

This no-cook, make-ahead breakfast is as practical as it is delicious. Simply mix ripe bananas with oats, milk, a touch of cinnamon, and maybe a few walnuts or chocolate chips for extra flair. Let it chill in the fridge overnight, and by morning, you’ve got a grab-and-go breakfast that feels like a treat.

Great for meal prepping and easy on the wallet, this is a healthy start to your day without sacrificing flavor or time.

  • Banana – I like to use a ripe banana with some brown spots. They have a natural sweetness and are easy to mash.
  • Old Fashioned Oats – Choose rolled oats for the best texture. Quick oats will be mushier, and steel-cut oats won’t soften enough.
  • Milk – Any milk works! Whole milk makes it creamy, while almond, oat or soy milk are great dairy-free options.
  • Pecans – Chop them for a bit of crunch in every bite. Walnuts or almonds make great swaps, or skip nuts altogether if preferred.
  • Maple Syrup – Go for pure maple syrup for the best flavor. Honey or agave syrup can be used instead.
  • Vanilla Extract – A little pure vanilla enhances the banana bread flavor.
  • Ground Cinnamon – Adds warmth and spice. A pinch of nutmeg can be a nice addition.
  • Coarse Sea Salt – Just a small amount balances the sweetness and brings out the flavors.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Ripe bananan is mashed in a bowl.
  1. Step 1: Place the banana in a small bowl and smash it well.

Hint: I prefer to use wide-mouth jars. It’s easier to add the ingredients and easier to get your spoon in it to get all of the goodness!

Variations/ Substitutions

  • Add Chocolate – Stir in some mini chocolate chips for a little extra sweetness.
  • High Protein – Add a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder and an extra splash of milk to keep the texture creamy.
  • Nut-Free – Skip the pecans or swap them for sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds or shredded coconut for crunch without nuts.
  • Berries – Mix in fresh or frozen blueberries, raspberries, or chopped strawberries for a fruity twist.
  • Nut Butter – Swirl in a spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter for extra creaminess and protein.
  • Dairy-Free – Use almond, soy, oat, or coconut milk to keep it completely dairy-free.
  • Warm It Up – Heat it up in the microwave for 30-60 seconds before eating if you prefer a warm breakfast.
