Explore New Jersey Weather Report: A Week of Rain, Clouds & a Promising Weekend Ahead

By Weather NJ | May 5, 2025

This week in New Jersey brings a mix of much-needed rain, on-and-off showers, cool temperatures, and hints of early spring warmth peeking through the clouds. As a low-pressure system remains stalled south of the Great Lakes and a ridge holds steady over the Northeast, the Garden State is caught in a tug-of-war between unsettled weather and fleeting moments of sunshine. Here’s your detailed breakdown of what to expect—and when you might finally be able to leave the umbrella at home.

🌧️ Current Conditions & Atmospheric Overview

Temperatures tonight will dip to around 60°F across most of New Jersey, give or take a few degrees depending on location. We’ll continue to see intermittent rain throughout the evening, with the upper low-pressure system to our west lingering and intensifying into Monday. This low is clashing with a high-pressure ridge extending from southeastern Canada into the Atlantic, creating a battleground overhead that’s keeping our skies turbulent and unsettled.

While the rain isn’t expected to be consistent or widespread, scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms are likely throughout the week. The pattern is classic spring: unsettled, uncertain, but not without its bright spots. Expect some drier windows—especially midweek—but keep your weather apps close and your plans flexible.

🗓️ New Jersey Weather Forecast: May 5 – May 11, 2025

Monday, May 5

  • Highs: Mid-to-upper 60s
  • Conditions: Overcast skies with periods of rain likely throughout the day. Light to breezy east winds, strongest along coastal areas in ECNJ and SENJ.
  • Overnight: Temps near 60°F with continued scattered showers.

Tuesday, May 6

  • Highs: Mid-to-upper 60s for North NJ and the coast; possible low-to-mid 70s inland (Central/South NJ)
  • Conditions: Another cloudy, damp day with waves of rain and potential for thunderstorms. Winds from the south/southeast may pick up slightly.
  • Overnight: Lows in the 55–60°F range as precipitation tapers off.

Wednesday, May 7

  • Highs: Low-to-mid 70s statewide
  • Conditions: Some improvement with a mix of sun and clouds. A few leftover showers may linger early, especially in North Jersey. Winds shifting to the west/northwest.
  • Overnight: Lows around 55–60°F as skies gradually clear.

Thursday, May 8

  • Highs: Mid-to-upper 60s
  • Conditions: A blend of clouds and limited sunshine, with isolated showers possible in the afternoon or evening. Westerly/northwesterly breezes persist.
  • Overnight: Cooler with lows between 45–55°F. Spotty showers may continue overnight.

Friday, May 9

  • Highs: Around 60°F statewide
  • Conditions: A cool, partly sunny day with a cleaner, drier feel thanks to light northerly winds. A more stable air mass begins to take hold.
  • Overnight: Crisp and dry with lows ranging from 40°F in the north to 50°F in the south.

☀️ Early Weekend Outlook: May 10–11

After a week of dodging raindrops, the weekend looks like a breath of fresh air—literally. As of the latest model guidance, Saturday should reach the mid-60s with abundant sunshine. Sunday brings even better news, with highs climbing into the mid-70s under mostly sunny skies. It’s shaping up to be the best weather of the week, perfect for outdoor plans, gardening, hiking, or just soaking up spring in New Jersey.

We’ll keep watching the data to confirm this trend by midweek, but for now, pencil in some time outdoors this coming weekend—you might finally get the dry break you’ve been waiting for.

This unique cultural event takes place at the storied Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge, New Jersey—a site steeped in colonial history and rich Jersey Dutch heritage.

What Is Pinkster?

Pinkster, originally a Dutch holiday tied to Pentecost, evolved into a springtime festival in colonial America, blending Dutch traditions with African cultural influences. At Historic New Bridge Landing, Pinkster has been reimagined as a lively, educational, and family-friendly event that honors these early traditions while celebrating the arrival of spring with dance, food, music, crafts, and more.

Highlights of the Day

🕊️ Honoring Ancestors – Pouring Ceremonies
At 1:15 PM and 2:15 PM, join BCHS Trustee Muriel Roberts in a moving ancestral remembrance ceremony. This spiritual tradition acknowledges and honors the ancestors who came before us, weaving historical reflection into the day’s celebrations.

Music will be provided by the talented Ridley and Anne Enslow, performing on fiddle and hammered dulcimer.

🧵 Samplers and Needlework: Stitching Together the Past
At 2:30 PM, historian and author Marty Campanelli presents a captivating lecture on schoolgirl needlework samplers from New Jersey dating back to the 1700s. Gain insight into regional styles, influential instructresses, and personal stories stitched into each piece. Her talk will complement a new exhibit in the 1752 Steuben House, featuring delicate, historic samplers crafted by young girls of the era.

🎨 Traditional Crafts & Demos
Explore colonial craftsmanship up close:

  • Watch the Lost Art Lacers demonstrate the intricate art of lacemaking inside the Steuben House.
  • Visit the Westervelt-Thomas Barn for a broom-making demonstration and see the blacksmith hard at work creating tools and treasures from fire and steel.

🎙️ Improv Café Presents: The Eternal Swing of Ella Fitzgerald – A Look Back at Her Most Legendary Live Performances and a legacy, built on a foundation of live performance brilliance – Singing with Swing – Tonight

At the heart of vocal jazz lives a name that echoes with effortless grace, incredible control, and radiant improvisation: Ella Fitzgerald. Known as the First Lady of Song, Ella’s voice didn’t just soar—it danced, it swung, and it made generations fall in love with jazz all over again.

Her legacy, built on a foundation of live performance brilliance, remains a shining beacon for artists and audiences alike. From the bright lights of Carnegie Hall to the intimate charm of European jazz festivals, Ella Fitzgerald’s concerts weren’t just gigs—they were events that redefined what a vocalist could do with a jazz band.

As we gear up for tonight’s Singing with Swing radio show—a Sunday celebration of the finest vocal jazz around—there’s no better time to revisit some of Ella’s most unforgettable live performances. So, pour yourself something warm, get cozy, and let’s take a journey through Ella’s most legendary stages.

🎶 Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl (1956): A Star Among Stars

In 1956, Ella Fitzgerald joined forces with the legendary Verve label for a recording at the Hollywood Bowl, backed by a full big band. The energy was electric, the musicianship superb, and Ella—flawless.

This concert not only highlighted her versatility and command of swing, but also showcased her ease in front of massive crowds. The sound of her voice weaving through brass stabs and syncopated rhythms still sends chills.

SEO Note: Ella Fitzgerald Hollywood Bowl 1956 live concert continues to be a sought-after gem for jazz collectors and historians alike.

🎤 Ella in Berlin: Mack the Knife (1960): When Perfection Meets Improvisation

Perhaps no other live moment is as iconically “Ella” as her now-legendary performance of “Mack the Knife” in Berlin, where she forgot the lyrics halfway through—but kept going with improvised brilliance that only a true jazz artist could pull off.

The audience never flinched. In fact, they erupted in joy. And when she quipped, “We’re making a record, boys,” she sealed one of the most charmingly human moments in jazz history.

That recording, later released as Ella in Berlin, would go on to win a Grammy and still stands as one of the best live jazz albums ever made.

🎂 Ella in Rome: The Birthday Concert (1988): Still Swingin’ Strong

On her 71st birthday, Ella Fitzgerald stepped onto the stage in Rome and delivered a performance that proved she hadn’t lost a single note. Backed by a trio, she brought intimacy, warmth, and wit—often teasing the band mid-song and breaking into laughter with the crowd.

Her rendition of “St. Louis Blues” from this show remains one of the most expressive and joyful live performances in her catalog.

🎷 Harlem Opera House with the Tiny Bradshaw Band (1935): The Launchpad

Before she was a household name, a 17-year-old Ella took the stage at the Harlem Opera House, performing with the Tiny Bradshaw Band. It was one of her first big breaks—a performance that set the wheels in motion for her career.

In a time when swing was catching fire and the Harlem Renaissance was flourishing, Ella brought a fresh, youthful voice that stood toe-to-toe with seasoned bandleaders.

🕯️ Carnegie Hall (1974 & 1991): Two Milestones in One Hall

In 1974, Fitzgerald performed for two weeks at Carnegie Hall, sharing the stage with Frank Sinatra and Count Basie—a trio of titans. The concerts were lavish, filled with powerhouse arrangements, and bursting with swing.

Nearly two decades later, in 1991, Ella returned to Carnegie Hall for what would be her final performance at the legendary venue. Though her health was declining, her spirit and musicality were fully intact. Fans wept. She smiled. The band played. And just like that, an era quietly came to a close.

🎙️ Ella’s Legacy: Always Improv, Always Alive

What made Ella Fitzgerald legendary wasn’t just her technique or perfect pitch—it was her ability to connect in the moment. She didn’t just sing a song; she lived inside it, invited you in, and made you feel like the only person in the room.

At The Improv Café, we celebrate that spirit of fearless performance, playful spontaneity, and emotional truth. Because in jazz—as in life—the magic happens when we let go, listen close, and swing with the unexpected.

So whether you’re discovering Ella for the first time or reliving memories of her live shows, remember: the song may end, but the swing goes on.

Discovering the Legacy of Coleman Mellett: A Special Screening of Sing You a Brand New Song at The ShowRoom

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, The ShowRoom Cinema in Asbury Park will host a poignant evening celebrating the life and music of jazz guitarist Coleman Mellett. The event features a screening of the award-winning documentary Sing You a Brand New Song, followed by a discussion with Mellett’s widow, jazz vocalist Jeanie Bryson.

The Story Behind the Film

Coleman Mellett was a virtuoso guitarist whose career was tragically cut short in 2009 when he died in a plane crash en route to a performance. At the time of his passing, Mellett had been working on a solo album that showcased his talents as a singer-songwriter, blending jazz with the folk and pop influences of artists like James Taylor and Michael Franks. Determined to honor his legacy, Bryson and Grammy-winning producer Barry Miles embarked on a journey to complete the album. They painstakingly assembled Mellett’s unfinished demos, enlisting renowned musicians such as Chuck Mangione, Steve Gadd, Larry Goldings, and James Taylor to bring his vision to life. The result is Sing You a Brand New Song, an album that captures Mellett’s warmth, optimism, and undeniable talent.

The documentary of the same name delves into Mellett’s life and music, featuring archival footage and interviews with family, friends, and fellow musicians. It serves as both a tribute to his artistry and a testament to the enduring impact of his work. Coleman Mellett

The Jones Road Wildfire in Ocean County, New Jersey, has led to a second arrest

A 17-year-old male, whose identity is withheld due to his age, has been charged with aggravated arson and hindering apprehension. Authorities allege that he assisted 19-year-old Joseph Kling in igniting wooden pallets, which sparked the wildfire, and later misled investigators about the cause. Kling, arrested previously, now faces an additional charge.

The fire began on April 22 in Barnegat Township and rapidly spread, burning over 15,000 acres across Waretown and Lacey Township. It forced the evacuation of 5,000 residents and disrupted power for 25,000 people. The blaze destroyed a commercial building and several outbuildings, threatening more than 1,300 structures. Air quality advisories were issued for New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and surrounding counties due to smoke from the fire.

Investigators traced the fire’s origin to an improperly extinguished bonfire made of wooden pallets. The Pine Barrens, where the fire occurred, are particularly vulnerable during forest fire season due to their sandy soil, developing foliage, and strong winds. Firefighters continue to battle challenging conditions exacerbated by low humidity and the effects of a prolonged drought.

Second teen accused of sparking NJ wildfire that has torched 15K acres in Pine Barrens

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has contained 75% of the fire as of the latest reports. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded New Jersey a Fire Management Assistance Grant to support response and recovery efforts.

The arrests highlight the importance of responsible fire safety practices, especially in vulnerable areas like the Pine Barrens. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to fire safety guidelines to prevent future incidents.

Bill Spadea Energizes GOP Base at Morristown Rally

In a spirited display of grassroots enthusiasm, Bill Spadea, a prominent conservative radio host and gubernatorial candidate, addressed a packed crowd of 250 to 300 supporters at a local bar in Morristown on May 1, 2025. The event underscored Spadea’s commitment to challenging the political establishment and resonated with attendees eager for change in New Jersey’s leadership.

Challenging the Status Quo

Spadea, known for his anti-establishment rhetoric, dismissed recent polling data that placed his opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, ahead in the race. He criticized the credibility of certain polls, labeling them as unreliable and emphasizing his belief in the power of the people over political elites. “Not credible,” Spadea remarked, expressing skepticism about the polls’ accuracy .

A Vision for New Jersey

Addressing the crowd, Spadea outlined his vision for New Jersey, focusing on issues that resonate with conservative voters. He proposed eliminating sanctuary cities, dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and rescinding bail reform policies. His bold statements, such as “Let them rot,” regarding bail reform, were met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Engaging the Republican Base

The rally’s significance extended beyond Spadea’s policy proposals. The turnout itself was a testament to the mobilization of the Republican base, signaling a strong desire for change among party members. In a state where voter engagement can be a challenge, events like this demonstrate the potential for increased participation in the upcoming primary elections.

Looking Ahead

His rally in Morristown exemplifies his ability to galvanize supporters and challenge the political establishment head-on.
