Nothing More is an American rock band from San Antonio, Texas. Formed in 2003, the band spent much of the 2000s recording independent albums. Towards the end of the decade, the band’s long-time drummer, Jonny Hawkins, decided to switch to being the band’s frontman and lead vocalist, stabilizing the band’s core lineup along with other long-time members Mark Vollelunga (guitar) and Daniel Oliver (bass). The band self-funded and recorded their fourth studio album, Nothing More. The album became the band’s breakthrough release in 2014, with multiple charting singles, including “This is the Time (Ballast)”, “Mr. MTV”, “Jenny” and “Here’s to the Heartache”. The band began working on a follow-up in 2016 while continuing to tour in support of their self-titled release, and in September 2017, released their fifth studio album, The Stories We Tell Ourselves. The lead single, “Go to War”, outperformed the prior singles, topping the Mainstream Rock chart, and the release earned the band three Grammy Award nominations; Best Rock Album for the album, and Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for “Go to War”. Their sixth studio album, Spirits, was released on October 14, 2022.
Lettuce Cook World Tour
The album, Cook, isn’t just a nod to Lettuce’s musical heat; it’s an invitation to join the band at the table, where funk, soul, jazz, rock, and hip-hop come together in one rich, flavorful dish.
Released on their own Lettuce Records label, the band’s next studio album offers a menu of delights that marks a band exploring new sonic territory. For these six life-long partners, the new songs feel like a nourishing meal that entices all of your senses. Like 2019’s Elevate, 2020’s Resonate and 2022’s Unify, before it, Cook was recorded at Colorado Sound just outside East Coast transplants Deitch, Smirnoff, and Bloom’s adopted home of Denver, where they gathered in one room to work on the new material. Ryan Zoidis did a masterful job mixing the final results with longtime Grammy-nominated engineer Jesse O’Brien. On the new album, Lettuce has expanded its ever-widening musical palette again. Coming off tours with both rap icon GZA of Wu-Tang Clan and and reggae legend Ziggy Marley while earlier in this year releasing the live album and concert film ‘Lettuce with the Colorado Symphony’ capturing over 90 minutes of collaborative symphonic arrangements with the Colorado Symphony
“This record is a little more three-dimensional than our past albums,” added Deitch. “It shows a lot more sides to the band, exploring further depths of production and arrangements.”
One can hear the Wu-Tang Clan vibe on “Storm’s Coming,” which could well be a lost track from (36 Chambers), while working with an orchestra can be traced in the epic cinematic score of the closing “Ghost of Yest,” which Deitch terms, “a cool tune that has symphonic influences.” Listening to hard-to-categorize, multi-genre bands from around the world also impacted the sessions for Cook, which reflects the global outreach that led Lettuce to put out the recently re-released Live in Tokyo back in 2004. Touring plans for Cook include a return trip to Japan as well as dates in Europe and Australia. “Hearing music from different countries has broadened our creative outlook,” admitted Deitch.
Still, there’s a generous dose of Lettuce’s patented funk, paying tribute to the great James Brown and his JB’s on the slow-heater groove, “Clav It Your Way,” marked by composer Ryan “Zoid” Zoidis’ cool, laid-back but funky saxophone, the classic Lettuce tune of “Gold Tooth” and a pair of spirited homages to mentors like Tower of Power (“Keep On,” with a co-writing credit for the band leader and original member of TOP, Emilio Castillo). On “The Mac,” the band pays tribute to the great JB sax player Maceo Parker, with whom the band had the honor of collaborating with several years back. Ace bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes describes the theme of his opening, “fresh, super-vibey” “Grewt Up” as “Now is the time to be good to each other without the need to be recognized for it.” New York Knicks fan Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff’s dramatic, “The Matador” combines the drama of the bullring with legendary announcer Walt Frazier’s patented call of “Matador defense” – letting someone attack the hoop with no resistance – boasting an urban feel harking back to Creed Taylor’s CTI and the ‘70s New York-based salsa label Fania. “It’s like something that should be the soundtrack to a ‘70s cop show,” says Nigel Hall, who takes center stage with vocals and organ on the band’s cover of one-time Five Stairsteps member Keni Burke’s 1982 R&B hit, “Risin’ to the Top.” “I first heard that song as a kid,” explained Hall. “I learned about the original through hip-hop. I always wanted to sing it, and now I get the chance.”
“Breathe” is described by Deitch as “a chill, hip-hop-flavored joint,” which begins with the sound of crickets, while horn player Eric “Benny” Bloom credited the song for allowing him “to think of all the possibilities my future holds if I just listen to myself and… BREATHE.” The title track is “a wild and crazy funk tune written at a party in Denver,” according to Deitch, while Bloom called it, “a hip little banger of a song to put a stank face on.”
The band also recently announced the launch of Lettuce Red Crush and Orange Crush wine brands with Aquila Cellars, as well as a recipe book of pairings to be included with the vinyl album and in digital form. The wine was brought to life by Bloom and Zoidis’ wine distribution company, Benny & Zoid Selections who made it accessible to purchase nationwide online.
“Music and food are very related,” said Deitch. “Use the wrong ingredients in either and you can ruin the sound and the meal.”
With Cook, it appears Lettuce has the right recipe for success… both musically and organizationally. “This is the best team we’ve ever had,” said Deitch of his current management. “We feel like the world is our oyster. Our concepts and ideas can really come to fruition now with our infrastructure. It’s beautiful to be in a headspace of feeling this fresh. It’s the start of a brand-new era for us.”

As the first single off of the project, “Fool If You Love Him” is available today digitally.
Originally released July 2, 1981, 4 spent more weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts than any artist in the history of Atlantic Records, including AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, and went on to sell more than ten million albums worldwide. 4 is certified 6x Platinum in the U.S. (RIAA), 4x Platinum in Canada (Music Canada), Platinum in Australia (ARIA) and Germany (BVMI), and Gold in 7 additional countries. It spawned three Billboard Hot 100 singles: “Waiting For A Girl Like You”, “Urgent”, and “Juke Box Hero.” “Foreigner 4”, as it’s often referred to, is the fourth studio album by the legendary British-American rock band released during a time of transition as they famously went from six members to four.
Released in 1977, FOREIGNER‘s debut album produced the hits “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice” and “Long, Long Way From Home.” The albums Double Vision and Head Games followed with more hits including “Hot Blooded”, “Blue Morning, Blue Day” and “Dirty White Boy”. Then came “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” Those songs helped give FOREIGNER‘s next album, 4, its impressive 10-week run at #1 on the Billboard chart. At the zenith of ‘80s sound, FOREIGNER‘s fifth album, Agent Provacateur, gave the world the incredible #1 global hit,” I Want To Know What Love Is.” This musical milestone followed the record-breaking song “Waiting For A Girl Like You.”

Margaret Cho: Choligarchy
Comedian. Actor. Musician. Advocate. Entrepreneur. Five-time Grammy and Emmy nominee. When hasn’t Margaret Cho’s strong voice been part of our consciousness? It feels like she has always been here, like a friend you can always count on, lighting the path for other women, other members of underrepresented groups, other performers, to follow.
Margaret staunchly supports the causes that are important to her: anti-racism, anti-bullying, gay rights, all while fulfilling her successful creative side with a legendary stand up career that has yielded 10-plus comedy tours. Her recent television & movie roles include “Erin” in HULU’s smash Fire Island, guest starring on the Ryan Murphy hit Doctor Odyssey, The Flight Attendant (HBO Max), Hacks (HBO Max) and two Netflix is a Joke comedy specials including Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution. Margaret’s latest film, All That We Love, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, earning Margaret rave reviews, and she is set to star as “Wasp,” one of the “Gray Sisters” in Season 2 of Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well as in Gregg Araki’s movie thriller I Want Your Sex.
Margaret, who Vogue magazine named one of the 9 best female comedians of all time, alongside Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner and Wanda Sykes, appreciates where she finds herself right now. “I think comedians in general, we get better as we get older, and we kind of get more observant, and more astute in those observations.”
Thankfully, Margaret has more stories to tell, and her production company, Animal Family Productions, has multiple scripted shows in development for 2024 and beyond.
Mammoth – The End Tour
GRAMMY® Award-nominated songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Wolfgang Van Halen continues to separate Mammoth from the pack. The music stands alone on a foundation anchored by his impressive sonic proficiency (across drums, bass, keys, and guitar) and airtight arena-size hooks with unforgettable vocals. He harbors an irresistible signature sound, inventive vision, and incomparable identity vaunted by a fervent global fanbase. For as unique as the music is, his story so far proves to be just as unprecedented. This is arguably the first hard rock act to genuinely break out from ground zero in the 2020’s, generating north of 100 million streams, toppling charts, and selling out headline tours less than five years since its debut. Back in 2021, Mammoth’s first offering, Mammoth WVH, took flight, bowing at #12 on the Billboard 200 and capturing #1 on three Billboard charts—Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Independent Albums, and Top Rock Albums. “Distance” soared as the first of two #1 Rock Radio Hits and earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best Rock Song.” Two years later, Mammoth II only saw him pick up the pace. It debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart in addition to bringing him back to #1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums Chart. It incited widespread applause from Rolling Stone, Guitar World, GRAMMY.com, Classic Rock, American Songwriter, and KERRANG! The band canvased the globe with Metallica and Pantera and supported Foo Fighters in North America as well as filling houses on their own. They performed on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, at MusiCares 2024 gala in honor of Jon Bon Jovi, and Wolf took the stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® Induction of Ozzy Osbourne. Now, Wolfgang pushes forward on Mammoth’s third full-length LP.
Pete Correale: As I Was Saying
Pete has performed on numerous late night tv shows such as The Tonight Show, Letterman and Conan. as well as filming three of his own one hour television comedy specials, THINGS WEDO FOR LOVE, LET ME TELL YA and the last being on FOR PETE’S SAKE. He has also released two comedy albums, GIVE IT A REST and MADE FOR RADIO.
Pete is also the co-host of The Pete and Sebastian show, a podcast with comedian and longtime friend Sebastian Maniscalco.
The Pete and Sebastian Show is one of the most wildly popular comedy podcasts on air today. The show is almost 10 years running with an ever growing fanbase and has featured guests to the likes of Bill Burr, Jay Mohr, Bobby Lee, Yannis Pappas, Billy Gardell and more!
Aside from his podcast, Pete has been a staff writer on several tv shows, most recently Kevin Can Wait on CBS as well as The Crew on Netflix.
Pete’s love for entertainment started when he went off to college. During his senior year, Pete took an acting class and knew immediately what he wanted to do-be in show business. This burning desire has evolved for over 20 years to what we know it as today-a reflective comedic take on his life and the experiences he’s been through.
With a conversational delivery and his trademark disarming regular guy attitude, Pete makes you feel like you’re listening to the funniest guy at a party as opposed to just another comedian on a stage.
His tours continue to grow exponentially as more and more people discover him and immediately fall in love with his accessible and extremely relatable point of view.
Because of this, Pete has evolved from being a must see on the club scene to now a nationally recognized headlining theater act.
Recently he’s coming off of Sebastian Maniscalco’s record breaking “It Ain’t Right” arena tourwhere he has been capturing the eyes and ears of fans all over the country.
Trivium: Ascend Above The Ashes Tour…
Driving guitar solos and throbbing rhythms make up the heavy metal produced by Orlando-based metalcore outfit Trivium. Since their start in 2000, the four-member band has sold more than a million albums and toured alongside other big-ticket metal acts like Iron Maiden, As I Lay Dying and GWAR, bringing fans at venues like Fillmore (Detroit), the Buckhead Theatre and Aztec Theatre to capacity.
Their most recent effort, “Vengeance Falls,” surfaced in October 2013 and landed at No. 15 on The Billboard 200, as well as in the Top 10 on Japanese and Australian album charts. Along with a discography of six full-length records and a healthy U.S. tour history, Trivium has also handled concerts throughout Europe, Japan and Australia.
For the 2006 collection “The Crusade,” Trivium frontman Matt Heafy took a slight departure from his metalcore scream to deliver more traditional singing vocals that some compared to Metallica. That album debuted at No. 25 on The Billboard 200, and Heafy went back to his signature scream for the follow-up, 2008’s “Shogun,” and subsequent releases.
Lawrence: The Family Business Tour Pt. 2
As NPR writes, “siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence are not your typical pair.” Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and Aretha Franklin records in their family’s New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together, they officially created Lawrence, an eight-piece soul-pop band comprised of musician friends from childhood and college. The band has since gained a devoted following for its high-energy, keyboard-driven sound, which features tight, energetic horns and explosive lead vocals.
In 2024, Lawrence entered a new era with the release of their fourth studio album, Family Business. The album’s opening track, “Whatcha Want”, broke into the Top 40 on the US Pop Chart, and Lawrence recently performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Today With Hoda & Jenna, and CBS Saturday Morning. The album was accompanied by their biggest headline tour yet across Europe and North America, which included iconic sold-out shows at venues like Radio City Music Hall in New York City, The Wiltern in Los Angeles, two nights at the Forum in London, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.
Live shows and touring continue to be key components of the group’s success. In 2025, Lawrence will be back on the road, taking The Family Business Tour (Part 2) to Australia for the first time, as well as returning to Europe, the UK, and the US for another round of their headline shows. In previous years, Lawrence opened for The Rolling Stones and the Jonas Brothers. They’ve also toured with acts such as Lake Street Dive, Vulfpeck, Jon Bellion, Jacob Collier, Soulive, O.A.R., and Bernhoft, and appeared at major festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Firefly, Okeechobee, Hangout, and Summerfest. The band released a docuseries from their adventures on the road during their Hotel TV Tour, which is available on YouTube. The series concluded with an episode dedicated to the retirement of their beloved touring van—affectionately named “Vandy Newman”—marking the shift into the next chapter of their life as a touring band.
In July 2021, Lawrence released their album, Hotel TV, and became the first band to release music under Beautiful Mind Records, the label of Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/artist Jon Bellion, who co-produced and co-wrote the songs on the album. The tracks on Hotel TV have garnered tens of millions of streams across all platforms and have had multiple viral moments on TikTok and Instagram.
The album’s lead single, “Don’t Lose Sight”, was featured in an international Microsoft commercial, which propelled it into the Top 20 on the USA Shazam Pop Charts and also hit #33 on Top 40. The band performed “Don’t Lose Sight” on Jimmy Kimmel Live, did a performance of it for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and closed both of their sets at Coachella with it, with the entire audience singing along. The band also played the single “23” from the Family Business album live during their set at Jingle Ball in 2023.
In addition to creating music, the band (particularly Clyde Lawrence and Jordan Cohen) have been outspoken advocates for artists and the challenges they face in the live music industry, speaking transparently in fan Q+A’s about industry dynamics, writing an op-ed in The New York Times, and even testifying in front of the U.S. Senate. Lawrence and Cohen continue to spread the word about the challenges in the live event promotion and ticketing space in conversations with outlets like NBC News, Vice News, Politico, and more.
Outside of the band, Gracie Lawrence is an accomplished actress. In 2024, she appeared as a series regular in the third season of Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble’s The Sex Lives of College Girls on Max, playing the character of Kacey. Her acting career continues in 2025 with an exciting return to Broadway, starring opposite Tony winner Jonathan Groff in Alex Timbers’ JUST IN TIME, a new musical that tells the story of legendary singer Bobby Darin.
Her other television acting credits include Billions, a series regular role on One Dollar (formerly on CBS All Access), as well as roles in films like Amy Poehler’s Moxie on Netflix, Rhys Ernst’s Adam, and the Disney+ comedy Noelle.
Meanwhile, Clyde has contributed songs and full instrumental scores to a number of major films and TV shows (often in collaboration with bandmate Jordan Cohen or frequent collaborator Cody Fitzgerald), including Hulu’s Animaniacs, Disney’s Noelle, HBO’s The Jinx, and Amazon’s Landline, among many others.
Lastly, a music production team called The Diner, consisting of Clyde, Jordan, and Jonny Koh, have written and produced songs for many artists beyond Lawrence, including Jonas Brothers, Shawn Mendes, Tori Kelly, Jon Bellion, Alec Benjamin, Trousdale, and others.
Pat McGann
Pat McGann is quickly rising as one of the sharpest stand-ups in the comedy world. A relative latecomer to the scene, Pat began stand up at the age of 31 after realizing he was not very good at selling packaging. He hustled his way to become the house emcee at Zanies Chicago, where he distinguished himself as especially adept at working the crowd. A father of 3 young children, Pat’s appeal stems from his quick wit & relatable take on family. In 2017, McGann began touring as the opening act for Sebastian Maniscalco, moving with him from clubs, to theaters, and to arenas, including 4 sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. McGann’s relatively short, but impressive resume, includes performances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Montreal’s famed Just For Laughs Festival, Gilda’s LaughFest, The Great American Comedy Festival and the Nashville Comedy Fest. McGann still calls Chicago home
Gipsy Kings Featuring Nicolas Reyes
Nicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation, The Best of the Gipsy Kings, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album, Savor Flamenco, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013.
This iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father, Jose Reyes, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band, backed by his son, called Los Reyes. In later years, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings.
The band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular, Randy Newman-penned theme, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star, John Turturro, for some of the promotion.
As active as this remarkable collective remains, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. It’s who we are,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons”.
30 years is an eternity in pop music but the story of the Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes has the depth to endure. Theirs is a music that extends through generations, to the sounds of their ancestors—Spanish Romani people who fled the Catalonia region during the Spanish Civil War—and reflects the vibrantly eclectic and peripatetic history of the gitanos.

The Revivalists: All in the Family: 10…
Eight-piece rock ‘n’ roll collective The Revivalists – David Shaw [lead vocals, guitar], Zack Feinberg [guitar], Andrew Campanelli [drums], George Gekas [bass], Ed Williams [pedal steel guitar], Rob Ingraham [saxophone], Michael Girardot [keyboard, trumpet], and PJ Howard [drums, percussion] – have made the journey from hole-in-the-wall gigs to sold-out shows at hallowed venues, multiplatinum success, more than 800 million streams and major media praise. Their fifth album, Pour It Out Into The Night (Concord Records) is a life-affirming album about living in the moment, fueled by lessons in gratitude and life realizations. As the world came to a standstill in the years since their last album, Take Good Care, personal experiences and life challenges abounded, with band members having their first children, getting married, and navigating the mental hurdles of lockdown. On lead single “Kid” – a hopeful anthem about capturing the essence of life, self-belief, and living for the spirit – piano peeks through bright acoustic guitar as a bold beat powers the chantable chorus, “Hey kid, just sing the songs that wake the dead, then you keep them ringing in your head.” “Kid” introduces an album that offers a nostalgic hopefulness rooted in living for who you are, an unburdening, and an appreciation for the here and now. Renowned for their live prowess, soulful alt-rock anthems, distinct mix of many of the classic styles of American music, and outward generosity through their philanthropic Rev Causes initiative, The Revivalists broke through with 2015’s Men Amongst Mountains, which featured the double-platinum smash single and Billboard Hot 100 hit “Wish I Knew You.”

Since the release of their rapturously received fifth studio album, Only God Was Above Us (Columbia Records), Vampire Weekend launched their live run under an eclipsed sky in Austin (hailed by Variety as one of the ‘Best Concerts of 2024’), graced stages everywhere from a surprise set at Coachella, a sold out Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks, as well as amphitheater and arena stops across the country highlighted by a two sold out show stand at the famed Madison Square Garden. With no plans to slow down in 2025, the band is set to dominate festival stages and solo dates spanning the US including Philadelphia, Miami, Charleston and more. Additionally, Vampire Weekend have kept their promise of returning to the city of Asheville after postponing their initial date due to the devastating Hurricane Helene.
Vampire Weekend continues to treat fans to the inner workings of the band as they release the latest episode of their sensational podcast Vampire Campfire. On the seventh installment of VC Koenig, Baio, and Tomson discuss the year ahead: OGWAU Tour Part 2, festivals old and new, a Frog on the Bass Drum revival, and much more. 2025 will be full of surprises, that’s a promise.
Our Last Night – The Final Tour

Combining huge melodic choruses, intense breakdowns, and wide ranging vocals they have created their own brand of post-hardcore. Lyrically the band strive to create a message of hope throughout all of their records. With no label and a massive fan base Our Last Night’s DIY approach of self-producing their albums and music videos has become a model for those seeking to make a living doing what they love. Their unique sound and ability to create rock solid covers of today’s hits has solidified their success while launching their original music into new realms. Dorothy with Special Guest Eddie &…
Projecting a full-bodied voice with every inch of her being, Dorothy Martin kindles a spark of hope into a flame as bright as the sun itself. The Budapest, Hungary-born maverick singer, songwriter, performer, and frontwoman of the Los Angeles-based eponymous band DOROTHY brings gusto, grit, and glory back to hard rock, exuding superstar-size confidence coupled with the quiet resolve of an old school Western anti-hero. She has unassumingly blazed her own trail with sold out tours, major collaborations, and over 1 billion streams already in the rearview. DOROTHY arrived with the force of a hurricane back in 2016, serving up the full-length debut ROCKISDEAD. Surging on DSPs, “Raise Hell” reeled in over 85 million Spotify streams followed by “Wicked Ones” with 77 million Spotify streams. The band organically attracted a diehard global fanbase with 28 Day in the Valley [2018] and Gifts From The Holy Ghost [2022]. KERRANG! hailed the latter as “a hot-blooded rock ‘n’ roll record through and through,” and RIFF raved, “Holy Ghost serves as a triumphant battle cry and a return to form.” Perhaps, Outburn put it best, “it’s her most bombastic and gloriously, victorious rock and roll work yet.” Simultaneously, the singer took flight as the rare dynamo equally at home on a track with Slash and Nita Strauss of Alice Cooper or Staind and Scott Stapp of Creed. She even notably dueted with Stapp at the Grand Ole Opry. However, her vision really catches fire on the group’s fourth full-length album, The Way [Roc Nation], introduced by the single “Tombstone Town” [feat. Slash].
UB40: Relentless Tour
The story of UB40, and how this group of young friends from Birmingham transcended their working-class origins to become the world’s most successful reggae band, selling over 100 million records and spending over a combined 11 years in the UK album charts, is not the stuff of fairytales as might be imagined. The group’s led a charmed life in many respects it’s true, but it’s been a long haul since the days they’d meet up in the bars and clubs around Moseley, and some of them had to scrape by on less than £8 a week unemployment benefit. The choice was simple if you’d left school early. You could either work in one of the local factories, like Robin Campbell did, or scuffle along aimlessly whilst waiting for something else to happen.
By the summer of 1978, something else did happen, and the nucleus of UB40 began rehearsing in a local basement. Robin’s younger brother Ali, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers and James Brown all knew each other from Moseley School of Art, whilst Norman Hassan had been a friend of the Campbell’s since junior school. Initially, they thought of themselves as an instrumental “jazz-dub-reggae” band, but by the time Robin was persuaded to rejoin and much later they’d recruited Michael Virtue and lastly Astro – who’d learnt his craft with Birmingham sound-system Duke Alloy – the group had already aligned themselves to left-wing political ideals and forged their own identity, separate from the many punk and Two Tone outfits around at that time. The group had nailed their colours to the mast by naming themselves after an unemployment benefit form. Their political convictions hadn’t been gleaned second hand either, but cemented in place whilst attending marches protesting against the National Front, or rallies organised by Rock Against Racism.

Silversun Pickups
Silversun Pickups’ sixth album Physical Thrills came together as a serendipitous accident during a dark time. The LA band began 2020 by touring in support of their record released the previous year, Widow’s Weeds. But the pandemic halted those plans, with the members including guitarist and singer Brian Aubert, bassist Nikki Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao, and keyboardist Joe Lester, finding themselves stuck at home. In that resting period, Aubert wasn’t focused on Silversun Pickups; instead, he channeled his energy into taking care of his son, Nico, while his wife Tracy worked.
But as much as his focus initially shifted from the band, he couldn’t escape the new melodies germinating in his head. “I would sneak off and start writing these songs, and I didn’t know what they’re for because I didn’t really think about Silversun on any level. I was just doing it to keep myself calm and keep myself company,” says Aubert. The songs were so different from what he’d previously written for Silversun Pickups that he initially thought he was writing a musical. There were “dream shanties,” gentler vocals, horror-inspired sounds, and other exciting new elements coming to mind.
The band finally was able to gather in person for a live-streamed acoustic performance on Halloween for The Dark Zone Network’s virtual music festival Queen Mary, and it was there that Aubert revealed the new material to his bandmates. They readily embraced the new direction—and so did producer Butch Vig. The band reunited with Vig, who first worked with Silversun Pickups on Widow’s Weeds, recording the record at the famed producer and Garbage member’s home.
When Aubert first reached out to Vig, he wasn’t sure if the band was making an EP or a full record; Widow’s Weeds was still fresh for Silversun Pickups. But once Aubert made plans to visit Vig and play him what he had, the music began pouring out. He immediately began recording with Vig, later having the rest of the band join.
Once the band began working on Physical Thrills together, they made some of Silversun Pickups’ most stunning songs yet. The record doesn’t depart drastically from the sound the band’s fans know and love, but rather enhances it with previously-unexplored fixtures at play.
Physical Thrills was colored by the pandemic, but isn’t meant to be solemn; instead, Aubert explores his own comfort in the temporary, newfound isolation. There’s a juxtaposition of playfulness with angst from having so much time to process untapped emotions. That’s something that comes through in the album’s instrumentation, too, with wide-ranging sounds that transform according to the weight of the lyrics.
There are tracks with shoegaze-infused distorted synths and guitar, like opener “Stillness (Way Beyond)”; bouncy, pop-tinged danceable tunes (“Empty Nest,” “Hereafter (Way After)”); pared-down ballads (“Alone On A Hill”); and a collection of “dream shanties,” as Aubert refers to them.
The titles of those shanties call back to “Dream At Tempo 119” off the band’s 2006 debut record, Carnavas, tying the band’s beginnings with the current, evolved iteration of Silversun Pickups. But, this time, the instrumentation matches the lyrics. Aubert forgoes the heavy guitars to instead create magical lullabies: “Dream At Tempo 050,” “Dream At Tempo 310,” and “Dream At Tempo 150.” Each carries a secret code in the title with numbers personal to Aubert.
With such an exploratory record, the band members felt free to traverse new ground. Guanlao, who usually shies away from fills on drums, took inspiration from The Beatles documentary Get Back, throwing some into Physical Thrills, influenced by Ringo Starr’s work on Let It Be. Whereas for Monninger, this record allowed her to showcase her vocals at the forefront more than in previous work. Joe also took a larger role in composition on this record, writing the piano part for “We Won’t Come Out,” which became the backbone for the song.
The making of Physical Thrills also allowed for whimsical moments, including Aubert creating a distinct tapping noise by incorporating the sound of drumsticks hitting Vig’s Grammy in “Hidden Moon,” and playfully pelting balloons at Monninger while she played “Hereafter (Way After)” on bass to create less tension.
While this record features such an eclectic mix of melodies, each song is interconnected with each other, meant to be experienced as a whole body of work. “All of our records are designed for people who want to listen to them all the way through and hopefully stick around with it,” says Aubert. “After a while, maybe you’ll catch on to the little things—not just the [pattern of] the dream songs, but maybe you’ll hear that, and you’ll hear a melody from the first song in the last song. There are crossover things happening.”
Lester says, “Physical Thrills is exactly the record that we wanted to make, which I’m really stoked about because sometimes you look back and think, ‘Well, that’s maybe not exactly how we would have done it’ when you go back and listen to it years later.’ But I feel really proud of this one. I think the songs that Nikki sings on are like the best ones we’ve done for her to sing on. The lyrics are better than they’ve ever been.”
Monninger adds, “We’ve been together for twenty-two years; it’s really interesting that we still love doing this. We know that we’re fortunate to still be together after all these years, seeking out the silver lining. I feel like we still have many more things to say, and we’re so happy with how this album turned out.”
Descendents
Since first emerging from (and defining) the Southern California pop-punk scene in 1978, the legendary Descendents have released classic after classic, from their landmark 1982 LP Milo Goes to College to 2016’s Hypercaffium Spazzinate. Now, after issuing a flurry of singles to get fans through the past few years, the band — Milo Aukerman (vocals), Bill Stevenson (drums), Stephen Egerton (guitar), and Karl Alvarez (bass) — will be touring in support of a new album. With a very cool twist.
What started with Milo Goes to College now comes full circle on the blistering 9th & Walnut (Epitaph), a “lost album” quietly recorded in 2002 by the MGTC lineup of Stevenson, Aukerman, Tony Lombardo on bass, and Frank Navetta (d. 2008) on guitar. Audiences should be geared up for shows featuring songs spanning Descendents’ incredible career, from “Suburban Home” and “Silly Girl” to “I’m the One” and “Without Love,” and including 9th & Walnut tracks like first single “Baby Doncha Know” and its incendiary follow-up, “Nightage.”
