Ground was broken on the project in June, with an estimated completion date set for the end of 2026. The new center will add 20 “aging-in-place” suites and 26 affordably priced apartments, directly addressing the critical need for housing for this population. As Audrey Winkler, executive director of Jespy House, passionately stated at the ceremony, “For too long, adults [with intellectual and developmental disabilities] have been left out of conversations about affordable housing and aging services. The Jespy Center changes that. It says loudly and clearly: you belong and your future is important.”

In addition to the new residential spaces, the facility will feature new areas dedicated to vocational training, health and wellness, and various clinical and behavioral supports. This comprehensive approach will ensure that clients receive the holistic care and resources they need to lead fulfilling lives. The project was significantly bolstered by a generous $13.25 million matching gift from Toby and Leon Cooperman, whose philanthropy helped launch the campaign. Leon Cooperman called the Jespy Center “an investment in the future,” emphasizing the need for stability and a place to call home for adults with disabilities after their parents are no longer able to care for them.

Looking ahead, Jespy House already has plans in the works for a complementary project called “The Hub.” This future endeavor aims to provide another 20 units of housing for young adults, complete with a training kitchen, a library, and a technology center to further support their independence and growth. She stated that the legislation ensures “lawmakers, advocates, and the public clearly understand how victim compensation is being awarded and where improvements may be needed.” Senator Wimberly echoed this sentiment, highlighting that “accurate and consistent data is essential for effective public policy.” By making this information public, the state can better identify gaps in services and address the needs of those who have been harmed.

The legislation was born out of a 2022 hearing that brought to light the disproportionate impact of human trafficking on marginalized communities and the pressing need to improve access to victim services. While the VCCO has released reports in the past, the last publicly available one was for Fiscal Year 2020. This new law codifies the reporting process, making it a regular and reliable tool for evaluation and oversight. The annual report will be based on the state’s fiscal year and must be completed within six months of its close. To ensure easy access for all New Jerseyans, the report will be published on the official website of the Department of Law and Public Safety.

This legislation represents a critical commitment from New Jersey to its residents who have experienced the trauma of crime. Local Talent Steps Up: Shore Conference Alums Join the Phillies Draft Class

The Philadelphia Phillies recently wrapped up their 2025 draft, and two familiar names from the Shore Conference are now embarking on their professional baseball journeys! Matthew Ferrara, a standout shortstop from Toms River East High School, was selected in the 9th round. Ferrara had an incredible senior year, batting an impressive .405 with 13 doubles, three home runs, and 26 stolen bases. He was recognized as the top high school shortstop in New Jersey by Perfect Game and led Toms River East to a NJSIAA sectional championship, a significant achievement for any high school baseball program in the state.

Joining him is right-handed pitcher Matthew Potok, an alumnus of Jackson Memorial High School, who was drafted in the 18th round from Coastal Carolina University. Potok showcased his talent with a stellar 2.52 ERA at Coastal Carolina, helping his team reach the College World Series finals. During his high school days, Potok also made a name for himself in the “Last Dance Tournament” in 2020, an event created to give high school seniors a final chance to play baseball after the pandemic-affected season. He pitched 18 scoreless innings in the tournament, demonstrating his potential even then.

It’s a rare feat for Shore Conference alums to don the BlueClaws uniform; since the team’s inception in 2001, only two others have done so: Casey Martinez of Holmdel High School in 2003, and Mark Leiter, Jr. of Toms River North, who played for the BlueClaws in 2013 and 2014 before making his Major League debut with the Phillies in 2017. The Phillies also added another New Jersey talent, shortstop Logan Dawson from Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, as a 16th-round selection. The inclusion of these local athletes adds an extra layer of excitement for fans in the Garden State who can watch their homegrown heroes climb the ranks.
