New Jersey Senator Cory Booker to Lead as Co-Chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention

Senator Cory Booker, who was a presidential candidate just five years ago, is set to take on a prominent role at this year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC). He will serve as one of the convention’s co-chairs as Vice President Kamala Harris is nominated for president.

The DNC revealed yesterday that Booker will join Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, and Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) in leading the convention. These four co-chairs were selected for their deep commitment to public service, enthusiasm for progressive change, and alignment with the Democratic Party’s core values.

“I am both honored and thrilled to gavel in the Democratic National Convention with these extraordinary co-chairs,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “Their unwavering dedication, boundless optimism, and commitment to progress are a true reflection of our party’s principles and our message to the American people.”

Booker will officially open the convention on Wednesday night. The program will include speeches from Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz, former President Bill Clinton, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The night’s theme, “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” highlights the convention’s focus on protecting democratic values.

Booker’s experience with national conventions is notable. In 2016, he delivered a stirring 20-minute speech in support of Hillary Clinton, and in 2020, he participated in a virtual address endorsing Joe Biden. His role this year is particularly meaningful as he supports a close friend and former Senate colleague, Kamala Harris.

During their time together in the Senate, Booker and Harris were the only two Black Democratic senators and served together on the Judiciary Committee. Their relationship has been both professional and personal, adding emotional weight to Booker’s role at the convention.

“For the last decade, I’ve had the privilege of calling Kamala Harris a friend, a Senate colleague, and my Vice President – my sister,” Booker said in a heartfelt endorsement after Joe Biden withdrew from the race. “I am eager to do everything in my power to help her make history and become our next President.”

Booker’s leadership at the convention underscores the Democratic Party’s commitment to unity and forward momentum as it prepares for the upcoming election. His role as co-chair will be instrumental in shaping the event’s impact and galvanizing support for the Democratic ticket.
