Montclair Film, renowned as New Jersey’s leading film non-profit, proudly presents the inaugural Montclair Film Summer Showcase. Set to unfold from June 27th to June 30th, 2024, at The Clairidge Cinema in the heart of Montclair, this event forms an integral part of the Prudential Presents North To Shore Festival. The showcase promises a curated selection of leading independent, documentary, and international films before their official theatrical releases. These films complement the previously announced Conversation With Stephen Colbert and Paul Giamatti on June 29th at NJPAC in Newark, serving as Montclair Film’s signature programs during this year’s Prudential Presents North To Shore Festival.
Kicking off the showcase on Thursday, June 27th, at 7:30 PM, is “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” directed by Peter Ettedgui and Ian Bonhôte. This captivating film portrays the journey of Christopher Reeve, celebrated for his portrayal of the Man of Steel in four Superman films. The narrative delves into Reeve’s multifaceted life, his rise to fame, and his unwavering advocacy for spinal cord injury research and disability rights after a life-altering accident.
Friday, June 28th, brings the centerpiece film “Sing Sing” to the forefront at 7:30 PM at The Clairidge. Directed by Greg Kwedar and produced by A24, this poignant true story highlights the resilience and transformative power of art. Centered around Divine G (Colman Domingo), a wrongfully incarcerated man finding solace through theater within Sing Sing prison, the film offers a stirring narrative of hope and redemption.
Concluding the showcase on Sunday, June 30th, is “Luther: Never Too Much,” directed by Dawn Porter, screening at 7:00 PM at The Clairidge. This film celebrates the life and legacy of Luther Vandross, the legendary musical talent whose journey from background vocalist to international superstar is brought to life through insightful storytelling and archival footage.
In addition to these standout features, the Summer Showcase boasts an array of compelling films, including “1-800-On-Her-Own,” profiling singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, and “Between The Temples,” a hilarious comedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane.
