Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, a paroled convict who breaks his bond to begin a new life, pursued for decades by the unyielding Inspector Javert. As revolution stirs in the streets of Paris, the lives of lovers, students, and outcasts converge in a story of resilience, redemption, and hope told on an epic scale. Drawn from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, with music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, the score has given the world some of the most recognized songs in musical theatre, including I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, and Do You Hear the People Sing? Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Les Miserables has been seen by over 130 million people in dozens of countries and 22 languages. This production is presented by Phoenix Productions, community theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts.
