On Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) will burst with harmonious excitement as it hosts the first-ever NJ Classical Kids Fair, presented in collaboration with WQXR and the New Jersey Symphony. Best of all? This incredible experience is absolutely FREE!
This isn’t just a concert; it’s an immersive journey into the magical world of classical music, designed specifically to ignite a passion for the arts in our youngest residents. Think hands-on activities, captivating performances, and endless opportunities for creative expression – all centered around the beauty of sound and rhythm. It’s the perfect way to introduce children aged 4-10 (and their grown-ups!) to a genre that might otherwise seem intimidating.
What can you expect from this day of musical adventure?
- Live Performances Galore: Prepare to be captivated by talented local groups, including the vibrant Keys 2 Success, the refined New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players, the dynamic Nimbus Dance, and the inspiring Paterson Music Project. These performances will showcase the diverse and exciting facets of classical music, leaving both kids and adults enthralled.
- Instrument Discovery Zone: Ever wondered what a violin feels like, or how a trumpet sounds up close? The Instrument Discovery Zone, generously provided by the New Jersey Symphony and Keys 2 Success, offers a rare chance for kids to see, touch, and even try out a variety of musical instruments. It’s a truly hands-on way to connect with the instruments that bring classical music to life.
- Creative Workshops & Crafts: Let imaginations soar at various stations. Kids can unleash their inner maestro at the “Cool Conductors” workshop, where they’ll craft their own conducting batons and learn the basics of leading an orchestra with New Jersey Symphony musicians. They can also delve into the science of sound with the Girl Scouts Hearts of New Jersey’s mobile classroom, exploring pitch and resonance using everyday objects. For those who love to create, musical craft stations, including decorating egg shaker maracas, will be led by the Girl Scouts Hearts of New Jersey, Paterson Music Project, and STEAM URBAN.
- Rhythmic Adventures: Get your groove on with a Beat Making Workshop by Grounded Music Education, or join in a communal Drum Circle led by the Paterson Music Project. These engaging activities are sure to get everyone tapping their feet and feeling the beat.
- Sweet Treats & Fun Photo Ops: Indulge your sweet tooth at the Classical Cupcake Carriage, where a professional baker will guide participants in decorating classical-themed cookies. And of course, you can take home a mini cupcake while supplies last! Don’t forget to strike a pose at the “Dress Up Like a Composer” photo station, complete with fun props and costumes, creating memorable keepsakes from your musical day.
- Encounter the Dragon: Experience a touch of cultural wonder with an interactive Chinese Dragon Dance by the renowned Nai Ni Chen Dance Company. This vibrant display, often seen in the company’s performances, is sure to be a highlight for all ages.
