Kean Phones in ‘Townhall’ with No Live Questions
Thomas H. Kean’s “telephone” town hall Wednesday night included no one asking questions on the phone.
Instead, an aide read submitted questions and the CD-7 congressman answered them. There was no give and take, and, of course, no surprises.
Kean, who has been in office since January, 2023, has been criticized for not holding “live” town halls, or for that matter, engaging with the public and press.
Some of the questions posed tonight were challenging – more challenging than ones I heard at a similar event a year or so ago. However, the question and answer session lasted a mere 30 minutes or so.
One of the more pressing topics of concern these days is the future of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
These are perennial concerns, but more so now. After all, Elon Musk has called Social Security a “ponzi scheme.”
Kean pledged his support for all three programs.
He was asked if he backs allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, which is now happening for some drugs. This was a key part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which was passed in 2022 when Democrats controlled the House.
Kean sidestepped the question, but he did say that he opposes the power of middlemen – Pharmacy Benefit Managers – to help set prices.
On some questions, Kean’s answers deviated from the Trump agenda.
He said he was pro-choice and that he would oppose a national abortion ban. He also said that climate change is “real,” but that he opposes off-shore wind in New Jersey waters. He also said he supports the SNAP program or food stamps for qualified individuals.
Kean began the session talking about Donald Trump “restoring common sense” and a sharp drop in illegal border crossings.
On foreign policy, he reasserted his support for Israel and the safe return of hostages.
The congressman said nothing in his opening statement about Ukraine, but was asked about it.
Using his strongest language of the evening, Kean called the Russian invasion illegal and said Vladimir Putin is a “war criminal.” Those are not things the president is likely to say.
Kean said he’s confident the administration is working hard to bring about peace.
As for Musk and his work. Kean supported the elimination of waste and a need for efficiency. No shock there.
But, like an astute politician – regardless of party – he said he doesn’t want federal cuts threatening initiatives he wants to see in the district, like new sidewalks in Summit and helping police in Byram.

Testa Endorses Ciattarelli
State Senator, Cumberland County Republican Chairman, and 2020 New Jersey Trump Campaign Co-Chair Michael Testa today announced his endorsement of Jack Ciattarelli for Governor.
“The Democrats in Trenton have failed us across the board. Our taxes are skyrocketing, sanctuary policies are draining our resources, and utility bills are set to go through the roof. Now is the time to continue President Trump’s momentum and flip this state red,” said Testa.
“Jack Ciattarelli is the best candidate to lead our party to victory in November and deliver on President Trump’s blueprint in Trenton – putting New Jersey workers, job creators, and families first,” Testa concluded.
Ciattarelli thanked Senator Testa for his endorsement, adding, “Senator Testa has been a tireless fighter for the people of his district and our state. I am honored to have his endorsement and excited to work with him as Governor, including signing his “Jersey Comes First” legislative package into law to end Murphy’s sanctuary state policies once and for all.”

3 Takeaways From the Devils’ 4-3 Shootout Loss to the Canucks
Here are three key takeaways from the New Jersey Devils’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks:
-
Strong Efforts But Missed Opportunities: The Devils battled hard throughout the game, with both teams going back and forth in regulation. Despite solid performances, New Jersey missed some key opportunities, particularly in the shootout, where they couldn’t find a way to convert. The game highlighted the team’s need to capitalize on critical moments, especially in high-pressure situations.
-
Goaltending Battling it Out: Both goaltenders had strong performances, with New Jersey’s Mackenzie Blackwood and Vancouver’s Thatcher Demko making several crucial saves. Blackwood, in particular, showed resilience, but ultimately Demko came out on top in the shootout, contributing to the Canucks’ win.
-
Special Teams and Discipline Matter: Although the game was tied at 3-3, special teams and discipline were important factors. Both teams had power-play opportunities, but neither could convert in regulation. Moving forward, improving special teams and avoiding costly penalties will be critical for the Devils to secure more wins in tight games like this one.
In the end, while the Devils showed resilience and determination, the shootout loss left them with a bitter taste, and the team will need to focus on making those small but crucial adjustments for future games.
Council approves resolution for site work for new municipal building
BRIELLE — The Brielle Council approved a resolution to authorize the borough engineering firm, H2M to initiate site work for a proposed new municipal building.
During the meeting’s public comment on the consent agenda, Brielle resident David Eareckson asked if there was an estimate for the site work and if it had been stated previously by the governing body.
Borough Administrator Thomas Nolan said, “The (for the site plan) estimate is $92,000…its to create the site plan.”
According to Nolan, the resolution has two components. The borough is also going to have a study done of the building that is going to try to hone in on where there is asbestos and other hazardous materials, which could escalate the cost of demolition.
“If we can demonstrate that there is not that much here or whatever, we would get a more competitive bid,” said Nolan.

“Another big reason for our success is our strong business community,” said Director Selen. “Morris County is home to more than 23,000 businesses, and just last year, nearly 600 new businesses opened here, adding to our already growing list of internationally recognized companies and 73 corporate headquarters.”
Selen pointed out that business success fuels job creation, tax revenue and key investments while allowing the county to keep the county tax rate flat.
“That’s why we invest in education and training, so that skilled talent can be found right here in Morris County. We’re expanding the County College of Morris (CCM) and Morris VoTech with a new Career Training Center that will offer programs in AI, robotics and supply chain management and we’re building an 80,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art Center for Health Professions with Atlantic Health to train future nurses, dental hygienists and radiology technicians,” said Director Selen.
Meghan Hunscher, president and CEO of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce delivered a “State of the Chamber” address, thanking all the sponsors, local businesses and community leaders who make an impact in Morris County.
“I am proud of the community we have cultivated here at the Morris Chamber. As we enter our 104th year, it is imperative that we continue to innovate and introduce new initiatives that build on our success. I look forward to developing new ways to connect our members to valuable resources, opportunities for business growth and rewarding relationships with members across the region,” said Hunscher.
Hunscher also announced changes to the chamber’s Board of Directors for 2025-2026, with Dr. Anthony Iacono, president of County College of Morris, succeeding outgoing chair Deirdre Wheatley-Liss, Esq., of Porzio, Bromberg & Newman. Wheatley-Liss reflected on her two-year tenure and the chamber’s achievements before passing the role to Dr. Iacono, who emphasized his commitment to education, workforce development and economic growth in Morris County.

Christine Cox-West, founding partner of The Fortis Agency, a financial services agency, was honored with the Saint Clare’s Health William P. Huber Award for Outstanding Community Leadership. The award recognizes a person who displayed outstanding leadership to benefit the community during the previous year.
In his remarks, Director Selen emphasized that Morris County’s success is about synergy.
“It’s about businesses investing here and schools educating our students. It’s about leaders who drive innovation and economic growth. It’s about the people who built our county and those who continue to build our communities by choosing to live and raise their families here,” said Director Selen, who also thanked past and current county officials for ensuring that the county is prepared for a bright future.
Selen said 2026 will offer tremendous opportunities to boost tourism and support local businesses with the 250th anniversary of American Independence and the FIFA World Cup. Currently, the county has more than 120 restored historic sites, including the first National Historic Park, and is anticipating thousands of visitors for these two major events.
“It’s our opportunity to showcase our county on the national stage,” he said.
