New Jersey is renowned for its vibrant sports scene, and high school athletics often capture the true spirit of competition and community pride. Across the state, young athletes push their limits, showcasing dedication and talent that thrill local fans and make headlines. Recently, the baseball diamond has been the stage for some truly exciting performances, particularly from the Northern Burlington High School Greyhounds as they battled their way through the NJSIAA Group III Tournament.

A Dominant Display: Northern Burlington Rolls into the State Final

The air was electric at Northern Burlington High as the Greyhounds played their final home game of the season. It was a Group III Tournament semifinal clash against Toms River East, and the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Head coach Gene Darling’s squad, boasting an impressive 27-2 record, was determined to keep their incredible season alive. They delivered a performance nothing short of dominant, cruising to an 11-0 victory in just five innings.

This commanding win wasn’t just about the score; it was a display of sheer talent and teamwork. Senior pitcher Luca Mannino set the tone from the mound, tossing a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts, effectively silencing the Toms River East bats and ensuring his team played without pressure. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds’ offense, which had started a bit slow, exploded in the later innings, demonstrating their adaptability and power.

The seniors, playing their last game on their home turf, truly shone. Jimmy Musser, headed to Mercer County Community College, had a stellar day, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Leadoff hitter Nick Dromboski, another senior, mirrored Musser’s perfect 3-for-3 performance, adding a stolen base, a run, and an RBI. Their confidence, as Musser put it, has grown exponentially throughout the season. “We knew we had plenty of pitching, but we weren’t sure about our hitting,” he reflected after the game – a sentiment that has clearly changed as the season progressed.

The Greyhounds’ explosive fourth and fifth innings were a testament to their ability to adjust. After figuring out Toms River East’s pitching, they unleashed a barrage of 15 hits, including three doubles and three home runs. Sophomore shortstop Brent Walulak delivered some of the game’s most impactful swings, including a crucial three-run homer in the fourth that put Northern Burlington up 4-0. Rider University-bound senior Nick Filipponi, who kicked off the scoring with an RBI double, highlighted the team’s cohesive approach: “Once one of us gets hot, we all get hot.” This chemistry and collective confidence have been the hallmarks of their successful season.

The game ultimately ended by the 10-run rule in the fifth inning, punctuated by a three-run homer from junior Cole Marchetti, sending the Greyhounds to their first state final since 2015. Their opponent in the Group III state final? None other than two-time defending state champion Morris Knolls, who secured their spot by narrowly defeating South Plainfield. The stage is now set for a thrilling showdown at Bob DeMeo Field in Hamilton’s Veterans Park this Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Road Ahead: A Battle for the Championship
