Montclair Brewery Celebrates New Jersey Icon Larry Doby with Special Brew and Art

New Jersey has always been a hotbed of history, innovation, and community spirit, and a shining example of this convergence is currently unfolding in Montclair. The vibrant Montclair Brewery, a beloved local establishment known for its dedication to unique craft brews and cultural storytelling, is once again making waves by paying a powerful tribute to a true American hero: baseball legend Larry Doby.

This summer, beer enthusiasts and history buffs alike will have a unique opportunity to connect with Doby’s incredible legacy. Montclair Brewery is launching a limited-edition “Doby Major Leagues Caramel Pale Ale,” and what makes this release even more special is the artwork adorning the can. Acclaimed artist and cultural storyteller Sydnei SmithJordan has created a bold and compelling design, a visual testament to Doby’s enduring impact. This collaboration is a perfect blend of craft, art, and history, highlighting a figure whose life profoundly influenced both sports and civil rights.

Larry Doby’s connection to the Garden State runs deep. While born in South Carolina, he moved to Paterson, New Jersey, at the age of 12 and quickly became a local sensation. At Paterson’s Eastside High School, Doby was a phenomenal multi-sport athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball, football, and track. His athletic prowess was undeniable, but it was his courage and character that truly set him apart.

In 1947, just weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League, Larry Doby made history by becoming the first Black player to integrate the American League, signing with the Cleveland Indians. This was a monumental moment, a testament to his resilience in the face of immense prejudice and discrimination. He didn’t just break a barrier; he became a seven-time All-Star, a two-time American League home run champion, and, alongside Satchel Paige, the first African American to win a World Series championship in 1948.

After his trailblazing baseball career, Doby chose to make Montclair, New Jersey, his home, raising his family there with his wife, Helyn. His legacy continues to be honored throughout the state. Paterson has fittingly renamed the baseball field at Eastside High School “Larry Doby Field,” which recently underwent a significant $2.8 million renovation, including a new synthetic turf. This revitalized field not only serves the next generation of athletes but also stands as a powerful reminder of Doby’s achievements and the importance of creating opportunities for all. Additionally, Larry Doby Lane now graces the area near Hinchliffe Stadium, another iconic Paterson landmark where Doby played for the Newark Eagles in the Negro Leagues and even met his wife. His contributions to the state and nation were further recognized with his posthumous induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Montclair Brewery, co-founded by Leo Sawadogo and Denise Ford Sawadogo, has become a cornerstone of the Montclair community. Stepping into their taproom, you’re immediately struck by its welcoming, diverse, and lively atmosphere. Adorned with vibrant artwork, the space invites patrons to relax and enjoy a meticulously crafted beer. What truly distinguishes Montclair Brewery is its commitment to infusing cultural heritage and unique flavors into their brews, drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of traditions. Their diverse lineup ranges from classic ales to bold IPAs, rich stouts, and imaginative seasonal offerings, all crafted with exceptional quality and flavor in mind.

Beyond the brewing, Montclair Brewery serves as a vibrant community hub, regularly hosting live music, art exhibitions, beer release parties, and charity fundraisers. Their deep roots in the local community are evident in their frequent partnerships with local businesses and organizations, using their platform to uplift the very fabric of Montclair.

This special release honoring Larry Doby is more than just a new beer; it’s a celebration of Montclair’s connection to a national hero, a testament to the power of art to tell important stories, and another example of how local businesses can champion history and community. The “Doby Major Leagues Caramel Pale Ale” will officially launch on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the brewery’s taproom at 101 Walnut Street in Montclair, with members of the Doby family expected to be in attendance.

Whether you’re a devoted baseball fan, an admirer of incredible New Jersey stories, or simply looking for an exceptional craft beer experience, this collaboration offers a unique way to raise a glass to a true icon.
