The trail runs through the heart of Morris County, extending from Pequannock into Passaic County, ending at Wayne. The Pompton Valley Rail Trail gives residents and visitors alike an opportunity to walk or bike to local landmarks, including the historic Pompton Plains Railroad Station, which is currently under restoration. This station, located just a short quarter-mile from the trail’s starting point, is an exciting future destination for trail-goers.

Morris County officials, the Morris County Park Commission, Pequannock Township, and Wayne Township have worked tirelessly alongside other regional stakeholders to bring this project to life. The trail is the result of a $32 million investment, funded by a federal grant through the North Jersey Transportation Authority (NJTPA), making it one of the largest trail initiatives in the history of Morris County.
The planning and design phase took years to perfect, with nearly $11 million dedicated to the trail’s design and right-of-way purchases, while construction accounted for another $21 million. Work officially kicked off in June 2022 after decades of collaboration and dedication from local and regional partners. Today, this investment in infrastructure not only enhances local transportation options but also fosters a stronger sense of community and well-being for all who use it.
“This trail is a perfect example of how strategic investments in infrastructure can dramatically improve quality of life, expand transportation options, and promote recreational activities. It honors the historical significance of the corridor while paving the way for a healthier and more connected future for Morris County,” said Morris County Commissioner Douglas Cabana, who also serves as the liaison to the Morris County Park Commission.

The path begins at River Drive in Pequannock, near Route 23, and stretches south to Mountainview Boulevard, close to the NJ Transit Mountain View rail station.
