A Beacon of Healing: Cooper Health’s Expanding Footprint in Moorestown

Cooper University Health Care, a leading academic health system based in Camden, continues to expand its reach and enhance patient access to premier medical services across the region. A testament to this growth is the impressive $150 million Moorestown campus, the first phase of which officially opened its doors in November 2023. This state-of-the-art outpatient facility at the Moorestown Mall is transforming healthcare delivery, bringing comprehensive care closer to where many patients live and work.

In a heartwarming demonstration of philanthropic support and community partnership, a significant gift has led to the naming of a key area within this new campus. On June 16, Cooper Health and The Cooper Foundation proudly unveiled The Dan & Lisa Falasca Welcome Center. This naming honors the vision and generosity of Daniel Falasca Jr., founder and president of Falasca Mechanical Inc., and his wife Lisa. Their substantial contribution underscores an incredible vote of confidence in Cooper’s mission to provide exceptional healthcare, reflecting a shared commitment to the well-being of the South Jersey community. This collaboration between dedicated community members and a leading healthcare provider truly helps shape the future of medical care in our state.

Their approach exemplifies the cutting edge of post-acute care, focusing on comprehensive and compassionate programs designed to help patients regain their independence and quality of life.

Cherrydale’s commitment to advanced rehabilitation is evident in its specialized programs, which integrate the latest techniques and personalized care plans. For individuals undergoing tracheostomy recovery, this focus on innovative methods is critical. It means access to highly skilled medical and therapy teams dedicated to optimizing outcomes, ensuring patients receive the best possible support as they navigate their recovery journey. Such specialized care centers are vital components of New Jersey’s robust healthcare ecosystem, providing targeted rehabilitation for complex medical needs.

Fueling the Future: New Jersey’s Strategic Innovation in Plasma Technology

Beyond direct patient care, New Jersey is also investing heavily in the future of science and technology, positioning itself as a global leader in emerging industries. A groundbreaking partnership has been announced between the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), venture capital firm SOSV, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) to establish the new Strategic Innovation Center (SIC) in the Princeton area.

This ambitious initiative, known as the NJ HAX Plasma Forge, is designed to transform world-class plasma research conducted at PPPL into thriving startups, high-paying jobs, and groundbreaking technologies. Governor Phil Murphy highlighted the state’s commitment to leading in innovative industries like plasma and artificial intelligence through such targeted investments.

The HAX Plasma Forge will be a hub of activity, featuring up to 10,000 square feet of lab and co-working space situated conveniently close to PPPL’s facility. This specialized environment will be equipped for low-temperature plasma research, crucial for advancements in semiconductor manufacturing and the development of the fusion supply chain. SOSV, with its proven track record in investment, will operate the SIC, providing up to $24.5 million in seed funding to participating startup companies. The NJEDA also intends to invest a matching $24.5 million, pending board approval, further solidifying the state’s commitment.

Plasma, often referred to as the fourth state of matter, is a powerful tool with applications far beyond traditional understanding. While PPPL is world-renowned for its work on fusion energy – the quest for clean, carbon-free power akin to the sun – plasma technology also plays a pivotal role in:

  • Manufacturing: Essential for creating advanced semiconductor chips that power our modern world.
  • Space Propulsion: Enabling the next generation of advanced satellites and spacecraft.
  • Healthcare: With promising applications in areas like wound healing and even cancer treatment.
  • Environmental Solutions: Such as water purification and industrial remediation.

This new Strategic Innovation Center builds upon successful past collaborations, like SOSV’s establishment of HAX, LLC’s U.S. flagship headquarters in Newark, another SIC supporting hard tech startups. The goal is to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and market readiness, fostering an ecosystem where entrepreneurs can harness transformative advances in plasma research to create businesses that drive economic growth and contribute to New Jersey’s ambitious clean energy and energy resiliency goals.

As PPPL Laboratory Director Steve Cowley noted, this partnership will expand the lab’s scientific footprint and allow its expertise to drive economic development. New Jersey is not just reacting to innovation; it is actively creating the environment for it to flourish, ensuring a brighter, healthier, and more technologically advanced future for all its residents.
