Get Ready for a Bigger Boat: Auditions Open for “The Shark is Broken” in New Jersey!

For theater enthusiasts across New Jersey, an exciting opportunity has just surfaced! Auditions are now open for “The Shark is Broken,” a hilarious and insightful play that dives deep into the notoriously chaotic making of Steven Spielberg’s legendary film, Jaws. This production promises to be a unique behind-the-scenes look at the tensions, triumphs, and hilarious mishaps that occurred when three Hollywood giants were stuck on a boat, at the mercy of unpredictable weather and a perpetually “broken” mechanical shark.

“It’s not the time it takes to take the take that takes the time. It’s the time it takes between the takes that takes the time to take the take.” This witty line perfectly encapsulates the essence of “The Shark is Broken.” Set on “The Orca” in 1974, off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, the play takes audiences into the stalled production of Jaws. Imagine: the film’s lead actors – the seasoned Robert Shaw, the pragmatic Roy Scheider, and the ambitious Richard Dreyfuss – are confined to a boat, with too much alcohol, clashing egos, and a temperamental mechanical co-star named Bruce. As the delays mount, these “hammered sharks” begin to bare their teeth, creating a comedic yet revealing portrait of filmmaking and the personalities involved.

Calling All New Jersey Talent!

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping onto the stage and bringing a piece of cinematic history to life, now’s your chance! General audition slots for “The Shark is Broken” are currently open. The production team, led by Director Mike Burdick and Producer Sean Lough, is seeking talented individuals to embody these iconic characters:

  • Robert Shaw (Stage Age – mid to late 40s): Portraying the complex, witty, and sometimes volatile actor, struggling with the demands of the production and his personal demons. He loves pub games and has a tendency to drink as much as he breathes.
  • Roy Scheider (Stage Age – late 30s, early 40s): The grounded mediator, trying to keep the peace between Shaw and Dreyfuss. He’s a reader, a talker of mundane information, a smoker, and enjoys sunbathing. (Actors may be asked to spray tan at the production’s expense!)
  • Richard Dreyfuss (Stage Age – late 20s): The youngest and perhaps most idealistic of the trio, energetic, ambitious, and slightly naive, navigating the technical challenges and conflicts with his older co-stars.

Auditions are scheduled for July 29th and 30th at 7 PM, with callbacks by invitation. Prospective actors are asked to prepare one or more monologues related to Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, or Richard Dreyfuss. While signing up for an audition slot online is highly encouraged, walk-ins will be seen if time permits. Be prepared, as actors may be asked to wear beards and wigs to authentically capture the look of the original 1974 Jaws production.

Behind the Scenes and On the Stage:

The production boasts a dedicated team, including Stage Manager Daraius Philips, Light Designer Mark Reilly, Costumes by Heather Tumbleson, and Props by Joe Leo.

This comedic and heartwarming “love letter” to the imperfect actors behind an unforeseen classic will transport audiences directly into the choppy waters of 1974 filmmaking.

Performance Schedule:

Get ready to mark your calendars, because once auditions are complete and rehearsals are underway, the show will hit the stage with performances on:

  • Tech Week: October 5th
  • Performances: October 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th at 8 PM; October 12th, 19th at 2 PM
