🇺🇸 Morris County Honors 14 Local Veterans in Annual Memorial Day Ceremony
Held on May 21, 2025, the Morris County Memorial Day Observance was a heartfelt tribute to veterans and fallen heroes. Though traditionally held outside the historic courthouse in Morristown, this year’s event was moved indoors due to rain—but the reverence and gratitude were as strong as ever.
A Ceremony of Honor and Reflection
Local officials, state legislators, and military representatives came together to present Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medals to 14 veterans, whose service ranged from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Maj. Aaron Oliver, a 21-year U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient, delivered a powerful keynote address. Reflecting on his time in Iraq and the sacrifice of fellow guardsman Staff Sgt. Jorge Oliveira, Maj. Oliver reminded attendees of the deep bonds forged through service and the importance of preserving those memories.
The ceremony also paid homage to ten Morris County Marines who died during the Battle of Iwo Jima, marking the 80th anniversary of one of WWII’s most harrowing battles. Their names were read aloud, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten.
Ceremony Highlights:
- Bagpipe processional by Chief Robert McNally
- Lakeview School Choir performance of the National Anthem and “God Bless America”
- Wreath-laying ceremony by Sheriff James Gannon
- Taps performed by Korean War veteran Michael J. Del Vecchio
- Invocation by Rev. Michael Muller
- Distinguished guests including Sen. Anthony Bucco and Assemblywoman Aura Dunn
The event concluded with a reception of hot dogs and refreshments, celebrating both community and country.
