Morris County is once again calling on residents to help shine a light on the women whose quiet dedication and tireless volunteerism continue to strengthen local communities. Nominations are now open for the 2026 Seeds of Change Volunteer Award, a prestigious recognition that honors women whose service uplifts, empowers, and inspires others throughout the county.
Presented annually by the Morris County Advisory Committee on Women, the Seeds of Change Award highlights the often-unseen leaders who work at the grassroots level to address some of the most pressing challenges facing women and families. The 2026 honoree will be formally recognized during a public meeting of the Morris County Board of County Commissioners in March, aligning with the celebration of Women’s History Month.
The award was established to commemorate the legacy of the late State Senator Leanna Brown, a pioneering public servant whose career opened doors for women across New Jersey. Brown made history as the first woman elected to the Morris County Board of County Commissioners and later became the first Republican woman to serve in the New Jersey Senate. Throughout her career, she was known not only for her legislative accomplishments, but also for her commitment to mentoring women who aspired to public service and civic leadership. Her vision and advocacy played a foundational role in the creation of the Advisory Committee on Women, making this award a lasting tribute to her influence.
For the 2026 cycle, the Advisory Committee is placing special emphasis on nominees whose volunteer efforts support causes closely tied to the well-being and protection of women. These focus areas include housing insecurity and homelessness, prevention of human trafficking, support for incarcerated women, and advocacy for women serving in the military and female veterans. While service in any area of community need is eligible, those addressing these critical issues may receive particular consideration.
Residents have until January 15, 2026 to submit nominations through the county’s online process. Community members are encouraged to think broadly about women who make a difference—whether through nonprofit leadership, neighborhood initiatives, mentoring programs, advocacy, or hands-on volunteer work that strengthens the social fabric of Morris County.
Over the years, the Seeds of Change Award has recognized an inspiring roster of local women whose service has had lasting impact. Recent recipients include Ginger Vukas of Randolph Township in 2025, Debby Seme of Martinsville in 2024, Alice Cutler of Morristown in 2023, and Mary Ledyard of Rockaway Borough in 2022. Earlier honorees include Lila Bernstein of Mendham Township and Phyllis Chanda of Flanders, whose work set a strong foundation for the program’s legacy of community leadership.
The award program reflects a broader commitment to celebrating compassion, advocacy, and civic responsibility across New Jersey. Coverage of initiatives that promote humane values and community-centered service can be found within Explore New Jersey’s Humane State section, which continues to highlight organizations and individuals making a meaningful difference throughout the state.
By nominating a deserving woman, residents have an opportunity to amplify stories of perseverance, leadership, and generosity—ensuring that the spirit of service championed by Leanna Brown continues to flourish across Morris County for generations to come.
