The group’s led a charmed life in many respects it’s true\, but it’s been a long haul since the days they’d meet up in the bars and clubs around Moseley\, and some of them had to scrape by on less than £8 a week unemployment benefit. The choice was simple if you’d left school early. You could either work in one of the local factories\, like Robin Campbell did\, or scuffle along aimlessly whilst waiting for something else to happen.\nBy the summer of 1978\, something else did happen\, and the nucleus of UB40 began rehearsing in a local basement. Robin’s younger brother Ali\, Earl Falconer\, Brian Travers and James Brown all knew each other from Moseley School of Art\, whilst Norman Hassan had been a friend of the Campbell’s since junior school. Initially\, they thought of themselves as an instrumental “jazz-dub-reggae” band\, but by the time Robin was persuaded to rejoin and much later they’d recruited Michael Virtue and lastly Astro – who’d learnt his craft with Birmingham sound-system Duke Alloy – the group had already aligned themselves to left-wing political ideals and forged their own identity\, separate from the many punk and Two Tone outfits around at that time. The group had nailed their colours to the mast by naming themselves after an unemployment benefit form. Their political convictions hadn’t been gleaned second hand either\, but cemented in place whilst attending marches protesting against the National Front\, or rallies organised by Rock Against Racism. Touring and making records for over 20 years\, House has a discography that includes over 13 albums. Rod was at the very top of his game in terms of chart success and sheer numbers of tickets sold worldwide. Carmine was right by Rod’s side during those most crucial years helping to write some of his biggest hits like “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks”. Rod has said of Carmine\, “He was in my band because I found him to be a brilliant drummer\, and he wouldn’t have been there if he wasn’t special. People love characters in Rock N Roll\, and Carmine was a real character. He still is!”\nSinger Rob Caudill is a dead-on Rod Stewart impersonator with the look\, the voice and the moves. He has performed all over the world\, mesmerizing crowds with his amazing vocals and high energy portrayal of Rod Stewart.\nA typical Tonight’s the Night set includes all of Rod’s biggest hits including Maggie May\, Hot Legs\, Rhythm of My Heart\, Forever Young\, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You\, Tonight’s the Night\, Sailing\, Do You Think I’m Sexy\, and so many more! The Budapest\, Hungary-born maverick singer\, songwriter\, performer\, and frontwoman of the Los Angeles-based eponymous band DOROTHY brings gusto\, grit\, and glory back to hard rock\, exuding superstar-size confidence coupled with the quiet resolve of an old school Western anti-hero. She has unassumingly blazed her own trail with sold out tours\, major collaborations\, and over 1 billion streams already in the rearview. DOROTHY arrived with the force of a hurricane back in 2016\, serving up the full-length debut ROCKISDEAD. Surging on DSPs\, “Raise Hell” reeled in over 85 million Spotify streams followed by “Wicked Ones” with 77 million Spotify streams. The band organically attracted a diehard global fanbase with 28 Day in the Valley [2018] and Gifts From The Holy Ghost [2022]. KERRANG! hailed the latter as “a hot-blooded rock ‘n’ roll record through and through\,” and RIFF raved\, “Holy Ghost serves as a triumphant battle cry and a return to form.” Perhaps\, Outburn put it best\, “it’s her most bombastic and gloriously\, victorious rock and roll work yet.” Simultaneously\, the singer took flight as the rare dynamo equally at home on a track with Slash and Nita Strauss of Alice Cooper or Staind and Scott Stapp of Creed. She even notably dueted with Stapp at the Grand Ole Opry. However\, her vision really catches fire on the group’s fourth full-length album\, The Way [Roc Nation]\, introduced by the single “Tombstone Town” [feat. Slash]. The albums include Eldorado\, Face the Music\, A New World Record\, Out of the Blue\, Discovery and Xanadu.\nAfter the original line-up of ELO broke up in 1986\, drummer Bev Bevan created ELO Part II in 1988 with English guitarist Pete Haycock\, American keyboardist and songwriter Eric Troyer\, and ELO former members Kaminski\, Clark\, Groucutt\, and cellist Hugh McDowell. The band later recruited English guitarist Phil Bates to fill out the lineup. Groucutt\, Bates\, and Troyer were all accomplished lead and harmony singers which provided an abundance of vocal riches that pushed the band’s classic sound into fresh sonic territory. Phil Bates left ELO Part II in 1998 and was replaced by American singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist Parthenon Huxley.\nIn late 1999 drummer Bevan retired and was replaced with American drummer Gordon Townsend. The band began touring as THE ORCHESTRA in 2000. The new lineup released a brilliant album called No Rewind. The album features original songs by Kaminski\, Troyer\, Huxley\, and Groucutt\, as well as a stunning interpretation of “Twist and Shout.”\nNine years later in 2009\, THE ORCHESTRA bassist and congenial front man\, Kelly Groucutt\, suddenly passed away the day after performing a concert with the group in Berlin\, which was a devastating shock to the band and to class rock fans around the world. His boyhood home features a plaque honoring Kelly’s accomplishments with ELO. THE ORCHESTRA recruited occasional ELO Part II member and former Styx bassist\, guitarist\, songwriter\, and singer Glen Burtnik to fill Kelly’s spot center stage.\nWhile Lou Clark’s multi-talented son\, Louis Clark Jr.\, worked with ELO Part II in the 90s\, he became a permanent band member with THE ORCHESTRA in 2011. The father and son team lived the dream of performing together onstage around the world until 2021 when Louis Clark Sr. passed away. Louis Jr. now carries on in his late father’s role as orchestral keyboardist and symphonic conductor\, along with the occasional romp on cello and guitar.\nThese days multi-instrumentalist Cliff Hillis joins the band on select shows and brings an extra layer of vocals\, guitar\, and sometimes bass to THE ORCHESTRA’s dynamic sound. In 2024\, the documentary No Rewind: The Orchestra Starring ELO Former Members was released\, providing rare behind-the-scenes band footage\, stories of life on the road\, and performances of each song from the album No Rewind. Edited together in a music video style\, the film is a fast-moving reveal of how this iconic band has earned its place in rock and roll history.\nOver the years the members of THE ORCHESTRA have played ELO’s greatest hits to millions of fans in over fifty countries. Their name is a reference to the 1986 filmFerris Bueller’s Day Off.The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands. With Monique Powell as manager\, front person\, and co-songwriter\, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response.Financed by Powell’s sister\, the band released their debut EP “Introducing SAVE FERRIS” on Powell’s label\,Starpool Records\, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20\,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars\, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. That year\, Powellprovided vocals on theReel Big Fishsong “She Has A Girlfriend Now” on their album “Turn the Radio Off” (Mojo). With Powell as manager and lead\, and as favorites of KROQ radio’s legendaryRodney on the Rock\, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA’s KROQ radio\, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year\, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band\, earning them a recording contract withEpic Records(SONY).The band released their debut full-length album for Epic in 1997. “It Means Everything” featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP\, several new songs\, and\, on Powell’s urging\, a cover of Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ “Come on Eileen\,” which the band released as their first official single\, and what was to become their most successful single. The band also released “The World is New” as a single which was featured in the film “The Big Hit” starring Mark Wahlburg. Olympic medal winnerTara Lipinski used “The World is New” in her debut program as a professional skater in the nationally telecast 1998 Skate TV Championships.\nThe band toured extensively in support of “It Means Everything”\, opening for bands such as Sugar Ray\, The Offspring\, and Reel Big Fish. In April 1998\, they made their television debut on HBO’s music series “REVERB” and made an on-screen appearance in the cult classic teen film\, “10 Things I Hate About You”. The album sold over 400\,000 copies\, and spawned three Top Ten hits in both Japan and Mexico. With two singles in the Billboard top 100 and full rotation on alternative radio all over the world\, SAVE FERRIS has managed to go Platinum internationally.Winter 1998 saw the departure of their drummer. After a thunderously successful main stage tour with the Vans Warped Tour\, the band began writing their follow-up to “It Means Everything”. The appropriately-titled “Modified” was released in October 1999. The album saw the band moving away from their ska-punk roots and into pop-punk territory. The band toured nationally with the band “Lit”\, of hit single “My Own Worst Enemy” fame. SAVE FERRIS continued to tour in support of “Modified” throughout 2000 and 2001. In August and September 2001 the band did a short tourof the UK. Winter 2002\, SAVE FERRIS had the rare opportunity to play front and center at the nationally broadcast Winter Olympics Snowboarding Championships in Salt Lake City\, Utah.Still fronted by their original lead singer\, SAVE FERRIS has been through a number of changes in their musical lineup through the years…Powell self-financed whatshe called the “For the Fans” SAVE FERRIS US tour in 2003. On March 29\, 2003 at Ska Summit 2003 in Las Vegas\, SAVE FERRIS played on the main stage to a thunderously positive response.Other appearances of note Ms. Powell has made: “Mayor of the Sunset Strip” film\, “Roswell” network television show\, “The Conan O’Brien Show”\, “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher”\, MTV’s Loveline with Dr. Drew\, the “Keenan Ivory Wayans” show\, and the “Late Show with Craig Kilbourne”.\nThe sold out Pacific Amphitheater at theOrange County Fair 7/27/13 marked the first appearance of SAVE FERRIS in ten years. Rameau’s Tendres Plaintes evokes sighing\, melancholic gestures\, while Le Rappel des Oiseaux explores birdsong through elaborate ornamentations\, idiosyncratic to the French baroque keyboard style. In Olivier Messiaen’s Petites Esquisses d’Oiseaux\, robins\, blackbirds\, thrushes\, and skylarks emerge in vivid\, crystalline textures.\nSchumann’s Waldszenen transports the listener to a forest\, where nature is imbued with both beauty and mystery. Among these poetic vignettes\, Vogel als Prophet stands out as an enigmatic prophecy delivered through the voice of a bird. The program concludes with Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 2\, a work that embodies what the pianist and scholar Boris Berman refers to as polypersonalia —a paradoxical blend of soaring lyricism\, aggressive brutality\, cabaret-like parody\, and mechanical precision. The third movement draws upon the rich tradition of skazki\, or Russian mystical fairy tales\, reminiscent of the music of Prokofiev’s older Russian contemporaries\, such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Medtner. Through these selections of works\, the program traverses a vast landscape of nature’s wonders\, supernatural whispers\, and human imagination.\nThis event is funded by the Ocean County College Foundation. After two records on Epic\, Fahl went on to pursue her own muse\, whether that meant writing and recording songs for movies (including the theme for the Civil War epic “Gods and Generals”)\, singing arias and medieval Spanish songs for Sony Classical or releasing a unique album-length take on “Dark Side of the Moon”… URL:https://explorenewjersey.org/event/mary-fahl/ LOCATION:NJ ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://explorenewjersey.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Mary20Fahl2001-1Zg1hx.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20250912T000000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20250912T000000 DTSTAMP:20251214T063013 CREATED:20250806T151826Z LAST-MODIFIED:20250808T200355Z UID:51203-1757635200-1757635200@explorenewjersey.org SUMMARY:Big Apple Comedy Club 63 DESCRIPTION:The Newton Theatre fan-favorite comedy show\, The Big Apple Comedy Club\, returns September 12th. With Borrowed Time\, she digs into her southern rock upbringing\, channeling the loud\, guitar-driven sounds of her childhood in Wildwood\, Florida.\nRaised by an outspoken Irish-Catholic family\, Fuchs never fit the conservative mold of her hometown. It taught her that rock & roll wasn’t just the sound of the South; it was the sound of the world.\nBorrowed Time shifts from personal storytelling to broader narratives. Tracks like “Nothing You Own” highlight the struggles of Cape Town’s poor\, while “Call My Name” turns the experiences of two women in a Liberian refugee camp into a universal tale of love and survival. “Double Down on Wrong” opens the album with searing riffs\, tackling political discord.
