Arguably the most thrilling, unpredictable, and difficult postseasons in the wide world of sports are officially underway: the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
You know the drill: eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs, including the top three teams in each division plus two wild card selections. Win sixteen games, and your team hoists the most magnificent trophy in sports.
Some titans of hockey industry have already been ousted from this year’s postseason, with the most surprising exit coming in Beantown. Boston’s victory over Washington on April 11 guaranteed an astonishing record for the Bruins. They officially became the most successful regular-season team in NHL history, as their 133 points on the season (with one game to go, mind you) eclipsed the previous record of 132 set by the Montreal Canadiens in 1976-77. Boston led Florida 3-1 in their first-round series, but the Panthers stormed all the way back to win the series in overtime of Game 7 on the road en route to a conference finals appearance. It was literally the biggest upset in NHL postseason history.
Elsewhere, the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche were bested in the second round by the Seattle Kraken (in their first postseason appearance as a franchise) in the second round. As things stand, the conference finals matchups are set! In the West, Dallas will take on Vegas. In the East, it’s Carolina vs. Florida.
